Has Anyone Done Something Like This?

Post by Argentus on Tue Apr 16, 2013 12:30 pm

The teen librarian at my local library and I are in the planning stages of putting together a teen writing workshop. It looks like it will not get off the ground until the autumn, but we are going to meet and discuss it.

Has anyone here ever done anything like this? If so, what advice can you give? Thanks!

I think Mercedes has participated in something like this. I may be mistaken. You may want to hit her up for info.

Arg, would you mind sharing the details at some time?

I'd love to get something like this started at my library.

Will do, Shadow. When it starts to happen I'll give you the nuts and bolts. Very Happy

Mercedes, if you did something like this, what approach worked best for you? Did you go for mixed media, such as poetry, flash fiction, short story, etc.? Maybe prompt writing, like we do here? Any info would be greatly appreciated. Very Happy

Argentus - I'm creating writing workshops for med students/surgeons, and I can add that how you run the workshop does depend on its purpose. Since mine are intro to creative writing (for a specialized audience) I do a combination of everything you mentioned, just set into specialized units. They're doing their mixed media work next month, as a matter of fact.

I'd say develop your outcomes/purpose, and the rest starts to get easier.

Thank you, victorya. My purpose is similar to yours, with an emphasis on technique and critical self-reading. More will be hammered out when I meet with the librarian.

I agree with Victorya. We do a little bit of everything, to cater to each other student's specific interests and also do expose everybody to variety. We do them in units, too. This amount of time is short story. This is poetry, etc. We usually start with five minutes of prompted free-writing each day to shake the cobwebs out. They don't need to share their free-write prompts. They just keep them in a notebook for themselves.

Are you thinking a one-time workshop for a couple of hours, or a summer-long thing? I've done both.

If you're doing a one time thing, I'd stick to one or two subjects so you don't overwhelm the students.

I'm *hoping* for a summer-long program, possible weekly or bi-weekly, depending on schedules.

I like your idea of free-writing to shake off cobwebs, and hopefully nervousness and self-consciousness as well. I agree these will be kept private.

Thank you, Mercedes and Victorya, for giving me good ideas for a working framework. I will keep everyone posted! Very Happy
