The Steubenville Rape Case

The entire thing makes me so angry that I could spit. I'm sure you've seen this, but I love Henry Rollins' take on it.

Awareness is so limited, and I think he hit the nail on the head with this one.

Too often, young people conceptualize criminal acts based upon a television or film's portrayal. Lack of consent is not limited to a woman screaming or crying out "no". It's also the college girl who is drunk beyond comprehension. And then the blame suddenly shifts to her. "She should have been more aware," "She should not have allowed herself to get to that point." But here's the rub with that. No man has ever had that said about him. No man has ever hung his head in shame because he made a poor decision that led to sexual assault. Yes, it is important to be aware of potential dangers no matter male or female, but at what point does it become a matter of awareness that incoherenece does not equal consent?

I could ramble on about this forever, but at the risk of rehashing everything that has probably already been said, I won't. But this was a nice take on it. Smile

It all boils down to consent. Someone must be legally old enough, sober enough, mentally capable enough, etc. to give consent. The laws do vary, state to state, but the bottom line is, if consent is not clearly and legally given, the result is rape.

And you heard that two teenage girls were taken in today for threatening the rape victim? One with assault, the other with death.

Two GIRLS. Threatening the VICTIM.

I believe it. I have three daughters, two are still teens... I totally believe it. The culture seems to be all about not only blaming the victim, but kicking them when they are down. Total mob mentality...

Yeah, blaming the victim is just...beyond my understanding.

I see how the crime happened. I do. The over-glorification of their achievements; the lack of any sort of authority figures; the complete misunderstanding of where the line is and at what point you cross it. I see how these total, inexcusable failures led from Point A to Point B. It's awful, but at least it's a side of humanity that's within my ability to comprehend. Not condone. But comprehend, sure.

But how the fuck could someone possibly think like this?
