Evil Dead

Post by kd1984 on Thu Mar 14, 2013 10:40 pm

As a diehard fan of the original, I don't know how to feel about the remake. While I want to hate it and snobbishly roll my eyes whenever the trailer comes on, there's that small part of squealing fan girl who might want to see it.

Thoughts?

It debuted at SXSW last week and the reaction was very positive. I read a couple of ecstatic reviews, so that bumped me up to excited status.

From what I've read, the "remake" is more so a full length version of "Within The Woods." The 1978 30 mintues film that THE EVIL DEAD was based on.

They of course added and updated choice scenes from that film...

But yeah, I think I want to check out the remake as well.

A local theatre here is running the original EVIL DEAD next weekend and my son and I are attending. I'm so excited to finally see that on the big screen, being as I've seen it nearly 100 times.

I loved the original. It scared the pants off me, though happily the humor in it helped me get through. It was just enough. I have a feeling this remake will forgo that and just go for guts and I-can-top-that gross out effects.

I saw the new film with my son last night, and had a great time. He was significantly grossed out. I'll reserve further comments until more people have seen it or are talking about it, but I'd see it again (my oldest daughter wants to go now). I love the original - I discovered I only have a VHS of it still, so I'm off to hunt for the disc.

I'm taking my son to see this Monday for his birthday.

He's 15 and has been a fan of the original since he was like 8.

My God, what a vile parent, I am...

I saw it last Friday and enjoyed it for what it was. The fangirl in me loved the homage paid to the original, but I can also see why it's getting some negative feedback from some. I, however, was grinning like a fool through the whole thing.

The last scenes in particular were great, and I kept thinking of the advice given to Raimi and Campbell that "no matter what you do, keep the blood running down the screen." No denying that the final scenes do it in a rather awesome way.

Shiney, I saw the original 30-minute short "Within the Woods" (on a DVD bootleg). I'm not sure you heard correctly as there wasn't much to it that wasn't featured in The Evil Dead, and what was different amounted to a Native American curse fueling the monsters. IF I remember correctly--I haven't dug that DVD out in years.

Still haven't seen Evil Dead. Can't get my girlfriend to go along with it. Sad

Just saw it. I thought it was fantastic. It was gross and creepy and overall a lot of fun. It was certainly its own movie, but there were some nice tributes to the original. It was, in short, just what I was hoping it would be.

Makes me wonder what the Hellraiser remake is ultimately going to look like, which I've heard does not follow Barker's original story line and instead delves into the world of the box.

With Barker not directing, I'm wondering if this will turn into a shitshow, or if it will be well done like this reboot.

Yeah, generally, I think it's safe to assume that remakes are going to suck. My initial guess is that a new Hellraiser will be awful. But I think Evil Dead shows there are exceptions to the rule.

I love John Carpenter's The Thing, so I cringed when I heard they were doing a remake. The thought of them screwing it up made me sick. But it's a remake, after all, so I wanted to keep an open mind. I rented it recently and, yep, it was terrible. I had the same fear for Evil Dead but was happily surprised.

I wish Hollywood would have some more original ideas, but I'll take remakes like Evil Dead if that's the best they can do. I guess there's a difference between remakes that are just trying to capitalize on a brand and make money vs. remakes that actually have fans' interests in mind.

Made the mistake of watching the original tonight. Good lord, what cheese! Haha. I haven't see this in probably 15 or 20 years. I remember thinking the end sequence, all the special effects, was amazing. Now...SO BAD! Haha.

Thought it started out great but then became a ridiculous farce of a movie that didn't know when to stop.  So ultimately I found it very disappointing.
