The Bridge

Post by Bordo on Sun Mar 10, 2013 1:20 am

Holy shit.

This is, hands down, one of the creepiest, most disturbing, and saddest things I've ever seen on film.

It's a documentary about people who commit suicide by jumping off of the Golden Gate bridge. Apparently the filmmakers filmed the Bridge for the entire year of 2004, caught 23 people jumping on film, and then followed up with interviews of the family and friends of the deceased.

The film itself is actually almost beautiful, if you can say such a thing about such a topic. The filmmakers never push an agenda one way or another. They simply allow the stories to be told through the images and interviews. It never becomes tawdry or melodramatic. It certainly isn't gory at all but knowing that you are watching people jump to their deaths is quite shocking.

The trailer is here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zwl-Pa_QT0M

Odd to say I would recommend this, but if you are into documentaries this is a great one.

I saw this a few years ago. It is almost beautiful. It's one of those films that's never quite left my mind.

I think one of the main reasons it maintains a kind of dignity (as far as the film itself is concerned...I don't think there's anything dignified about winding up blown open and feeding the seagulls after hitting the water at 75mph) is that there is no gore. The scenes of people jumping are extremely shocking just because you know what's happening and not because of any grue factor.

It doesn't seem to be streaming anywhere, so you'd have to either rent it through Apple or Netflix or purchase the DVD on Amazon. I don't think it's the kind of movie you watch more than once, so I wouldn't go buying it if I were you. Unless you enjoy repeatedly watching people jump off bridges...

I suggest you set aside an hour and a half when you're not going to be interpreted. Once you start watching it, you're going to get absorbed.

yeah, I saw that a few years back.

Haunting and achingly honest.
