Reads like one of Shiney's stories.
It does, actually.

I, for one, am a fan of Gothic Americana when I need creepy. Something about the blend of folk, bluegrass, evil, murder, outlaw scarecrows, and the devil just does it for me. Love Strawfoot. Or Timber Timbre. Or the Builders & the Butchers. And JUSTIN CROSS. Creepy ass vid. It's not hard rock, but it's still pretty fackin' creepy.

You can haz video.

I was completely creeped out by a real hidden song on the X-Files Soundtrack. It was track 0 on the CD which not every player could reach. I found it by accident when going back to the beginning of the CD. I was intrigued by the negative numbers on the stereo's LCD when Nick Cave's vocals came out of the speakers and I froze. No matter how many times I've heard the song it's still unnerving.

I need to give that Justin Cross a further listen (straw foot sounds great too), sounds like what I've been in the mood for, excepting the fact that I'm generally not in the mood for breathy vocal delivery like that.

Then again if I'm in the mood for stuff like that I'd rather eject the vocals and go for something like this:

Or this (Dirty Three proper):

To varying degrees. It's all pretty oppressive. I like the mixture of tibetan instruments, found sounds, and field recordings on Heresy. Definitely check out his other stuff if you like that.

All instrumental, though?

Yeah. Every once in a while you'll hear vague voices but nothing you can pull anything more than an intimation of.

He did do some remixes of Tool and stuff though if that's more your bag.

I should add I like most everything up until his last 4 or so albums. Just don't really feel those at all.

Not really "scary" but dark and atmospheric, and often beautiful.  Recently, I've been enjoying bands like Godspeed You Black Emperor and Boards of Canada.

East Hastings- Godspeed You Black Emperor

Music is Math- Boards of Canada

It's about time I start posting on these forums.

When I write horror or dark fiction, I listen to some creepy-ass music.  It just helps the mood, and all the more when it unnerves the sh*t out of me.  Here's a little tour de moi, dark music style:

I grew into this scene with Danny Elfman's amazing score to Batman Returns, and in particular, this track:

As time went on, and I began discovering other artists, I uncovered masterpieces such as this...

...and this...

More recently, I really branched even more outward, discovering the dark beauty of other film score composers, including John Debney's amazing score to The Relic, and then later still, the amazing Joseph Bishara...

and

Finally, just because, here's a little helping of Christopher Young's power in the vein of Sinister.

Inspired yet?  You're welcome.  Rolling Eyes

It's not really "scary", per se, but I like Johnny Hollow and Collide. I think they're both a little creepy.

Hands down, folks...hands down.

This has to be one of the absolute creepiest songs I've ever had the "pleasure" of hearing. It's instrum... heh, sorry, no puns. It's a key song for me when I write horror. Hopefully it will be for you, too.

Now here's a prompt: I dare you to listen to it, on headphones, in the dark, with your back turned to an open door.  I dare you.

I've never listened to this band, but that was pretty cool. I know not all their stuff is like that, but I suspect I'd dig them.

I take it you're a fan of the Devlab album?

sunnO))) are a drone band, with a very particular sound and style, even as one song may be radically different from another. They're definitely worth checking out. I would recommend - incidentally, from the same album - "My Wall," which features Julian Cope on vocals. It's strange and mysterious.

And as for Devlab - believe it or not, I haven't actually heard it yet.
