Pumped for Prometheus? I Sure Am.

Post by Zach on Sat Apr 07, 2012 7:50 pm

This looks so bad ass. I guess it was originally going to be a prequel to Alien, but some things got changed and now it's just set in the same universe. You can totally see the similarities though. Anyone recognize the thing at 2:11-2:12 ish? I sure do. rockon

I feel like I've waited my whole life for this movie lol I've always wondered about the space jockey in Alien and when I heard a year or two ago that Ridley Scott was making an Alien prequel, the giddy girl side of me couldn't stop the butterflies! Check out this site http://www.prometheus-movie.com/
I've been on their boards since the beginning (but like on here, it's rare I get a chance to make any significant contributions, unfortunately) but there's a whole community devoted to uncovering everything Prometheus, from augmented reality viral marketing campaigns to analyzing every. last. image. released, including the trailer/teasers. There are some great theories on the boards, with new information added every day. I can't wait to finally see this movie, then go back and see whose ideas were closest lol

Confession time: I've never watched a single Alien movie.

Each one seems to have a different tone. Watch the original, just called Alien. It's as much a horror movie as it is sci-fi. I can honestly say that it is one of the most excellently paced horror films I've ever seen. Tension abounds. Give it at try. You won't regret it.

I'm probably one of very few, but I thought the 3rd movie was awesome. Atmospheric and really, really bleak. Plus, it was interesting to see the alien take on aspects of the host, which I didn't see coming even though it makes perfect sense.

First off, Ken... WATCH ALIEN. right now. NOW! and second, I still love Alien 3 as well. I appreciated 4 but I feel it was more of a comic than a movie. In fact, the 2 part comic version was better than the movie, I feel. As far as alien vs predator... don't get me started on that.

Going to have to go against the grain here. I honestly like to pretend Alien 3 never happened. Maybe if I could look at it as something completely unrelated to Alien and Aliens, I could give it more credit. I also admit that I'm bias against anything that comes off as low budget. However, I just didn't think it had the same magic the other movies had. And yeah, I also like to pretend AvP never happened. Especially whatever the newest one was. When they started making those, I was like, "Game over, man! Game over!" banghead

You are dead to me.

I'm kidding! Maybe. Seriously, Alien is my favorite movie of all time. I quote lines from Alien and Aliens both on a regular basis, I've taught the toddler how to hiss like an Alien, and I have watched the Prometheus trailer more times than I will admit. I am so excited for this movie, I cannot stand myself!!

I can't wait, either. Really looking forward to this. Besides the very B or C Rated Tarantulas! (or whatever that Shatner movie was called), Alien was my first real horror movie. Watched it at age 6 on HBO with my Dad. Needless to say, I was on the floor of my parents room that night. I was scared out of my mind, and hooked for life. I've enjoyed every single Alien movie on some level and I also really ejnoyed the 3rd movie. It's not the best one, but I agree about the atmosphere and the bleakness. It's good enough in my book.

Yes! That's the one. It sent me to my parents' room as well, but not with the force and extreme prejudice that Alien did.

June 8th! I'm all over this. I saw Alien when I was 4 on laserdisc, and Aliens at 6 in theaters. I then read all the Dark Horse comics, and saw A3 through AVP2 in turn (also in theaters), and while the latter weren't hardly as good as the first film, I did enjoy them in that guilty pleasure sort of way.

So, Prometheus? Hell yeah!

So I totally dug it. I think not having Alien expectations worked in my favor because I didn't have anything to compare it to. We watched it in 3D and while I was relieved that there weren't any gimmicky "WAH, I'm going to jump out at you!" moments strictly for the effect of 3D, I feel like I wouldn't have missed a thing by watching it without.

Shaw's characters was awesome. The music was very, very cool. I relived the goriest parts of my c-section.

What did you guys think?

It had a far different vibe than I expected. I didn't love it, but I liked it a lot. I need to see it a second time to pick up all the things I'm certain I missed.

More...tension, I think. The trailers played up the same sort of fear-tension that Alien had, so I was expecting more of that.

I was actually surprised at how slow it was. It was beautiful, etc, but I spent a really long time at the beginning thinking, "Okay. Let's get to the meat, yes?" But it really makes me want to see Alien. And I love Ridley Scott's women.

Alien had that same sort of slow beginning, but there was an undercurrent of tension the entire time. To be fair, Alien is most definitely a horror movie, albeit a sci-fi one, whereas Prometheus is more sci-fi, less horror. I do believe the trailers failed to convey that tone. (Then again, it might just be my perception of the trailers.)

All that being said, I did like it, just not as much as I thought/hoped I would.

(I do wonder, though, would I feel the same if I'd not seen any of the trailers beforehand?)

Prometheus - Could hardly stand the wait in the months leading up to this. It was worth it. It had a way of being a beautiful movie, even though it was Sci-Fi/horror.

Spoiler:
I know that the director/producers/etc...say this isn't a prequel to the Alien franchise, but at the very least it's an Origin story, and I LOVE origin stories. They did a great job with the "slow burn" handling of things. I like that the scenes weren't blinking along at 1000 mph, but you could settle into each scene. I really hope we get to see what Dr. Elisabeth Shaw finds out. I like how the creatures evolved from the/because of the black goo (X-Files!!) and we saw the process of how human(oid) DNA was used to get to the Alien we all know and love. I wasn't dissapointed with this movie.

Just saw it. I'm with you. I liked it quite a bit ... but not quite as much as I thought I would. I think my expectations were high from the trailers but, even more than that, also from the fact that this was Ridley Scott's return to sci-fi. I was expecting something as amazing as Alien or Blade Runner, and it fell short of those expectations. It was probably unfair of me to have those high of expectations to begin with. Fantastic visuals and definitely some tense, squirm-inducing scenes. I think they could have done just a few things differently and it would have been great.

--- edited to further sanitize any spoilery

I agree that if a few things were handled differently it would have went from good to great. Overall I really enjoyed the ride and it got my older kids interested in earlier Scott films. They were about to heckle when they saw the old 20th Century Fox logo come up on Alien and they quickly canned it as that 33 year old film scared the hell out of them. I'd go see Prometheus again though.

One serious gripe and possible spoilerish observation:

Spoiler:

Why the hell do they keep putting actors in old-man makeup? That whole thing with Guy Pearce really bumped me out of the mood. Im sure there are plenty of 80-90ish actors who would love the work and would really add to the impact with a minimum amount of makeup and it would be convincing. Sorry but that was a major irk during the parts that really picked up otherwise.
