Jani Lane, Dead at 47

Post by Shiney on Fri Aug 12, 2011 3:13 pm

WARRANT got a lot of flack, even from those of us who loved cheesy hair metal. They were slickly produced and way too poppy for the metal masses, but a great band. Lane was a talented songwriter, that sadly, never got the attention deserved for it. While everyone knows and mentions "Cherry Pie", it haunted him that he was known mainly for that cheesy anthem to females...and their naughty bits.

He wrote so many other great strong songs that never achieved that level of fame: "I Saw Red", "Andy Warhol Was Right", "April 2031"...

Drinking and drugs wrecked him, he left or was fired from WARRANT at least three times...but still kept in the public eye with solo gigs, albums and last year filling in for an ailing Jack Russell in GREAT WHITE.

Lane was found dead in a Las Vegas hotel room last night. He was 47.

Never cared for them outside of the odd song here or there, like Uncle Tom's Cabin, but it's still sad to see someone self destruct like that.

They had some really solid songs...I think you'd probably like "Dog Eat Dog"...fairly heavy.

Great band. Sad he couldn't get it together...and keep it that way.

I always liked the shit they covered live, it was always an interesting choice...

That version of Balls to the Wall was killer. If only they had written songs like that...

Yeah, I've heard that a lot, but after buying Winger's album Pull, I'm a bit sceptical.

Dog Eat Dog is an awesome album. "Andy Warhol Was Right" is one of my all time favorite songs. I sing it to my kids as a lullaby.

Dude! Pull is fantastic!

Anyway, Warrant was pretty awesome on the first few albums. They lost touch a bit with Ultraphobic and Belly to Belly, but the latest two are great. Of course, those two don't feature Lane. Still, he was a great singer and a fantastic songwriter. Just a talented dude all around. It's sad, you know, that most people have no idea he did anything outside of "Cherry Pie," which wasn't even their biggest hit.

He also did really well with Great White. Despite the damage he'd clearly done to himself, he could still sing. Check him out doing a pretty bad-ass Steven Tyler:

You're nuts! That is a great album. It's not super-heavy, but it's definitely heavier than the first two. But yeah, great album. It has one of the best ballads I've ever heard on it, too.

Awesome!

Their latest album is pretty heavy, though. Laughing

But you didn't like Pull? Man, songs like "Junkyard Dog" were just as heavy, just as good.

Wow . . . I'd never heard any later Winger stuff beyond "Down Incognito".

"Spell I'm Under" kicks ass!

See? This Newman cat knows his 80s ballads! Haha. Pull is a great album. Hell, I'd venture to say all the Winger albums are pretty damn good.

Pull was OK, but not good enough to keep. I was happy someone on lala wanted it. And that early Winger stuff was putrid.

James, Swapacd is almost as cool as lala.

I score a lot of good stuff through them.

Off Topic is our middle name.

SwapaCD, SwapaDVD and PaperbackSwap are all great. You need patience, though.

Patience I got. What is there to be in a hurry over?

The biggest complaint I've heard from people about those sites is, "Waaaah! I never get anything." That's because there's a point system. The higher something is on your list, the more points you get each day. If you have something in the top spot and you're third in line to receive it, you will eventually become first in line if those other two people requesting it have it in a lower spot on their want list.

No one likes that, though. Lala was good because you could broker trades, but they also sucked because you never knew what you were going to get, just a CD, a CD with a booklet, or a CD with all the art. I hated that.

Anyway, just add stuff to your want list and wait. You'll get stuff eventually.
