Monster Magnet?

Post by JNewman on Mon May 02, 2011 1:35 pm

Any fans on here?

I just realized I don't really have much of their stuff (DOPES TO INFINITY and POWERTRIP, I believe, are the only albums I own). I need to remedy that soon, 'cause I really dig their sound. Would love to catch them live one day . . . .

A friend who I was attempting to turn on to Monster Magnet a while back asked me how I'd describe their sound. I said, "The Cult meets Black Sabbath with a handful of LSD." Would you guys say that's pretty fair?

Not a fan of The Cult, so I don't know, but I do know Monster Magnet is brilliant! One of my all-time favorite bands. The first three albums—Monster Magnet, Spine of God, and the Tab...25 EP—are far more "stoner rock" than those album that came after, but they're still solid. You can just tell the band probably did a lot more drugs back then. Haha.

But if you dig Dopes to Infinity (my favorite) and Powertrip, then you should dig all the others. They really began to hit their stride on Superjudge.

"Spine Of God" is my favorite, but I agree with Ken....totally solid band.

I saw them twice back in the early 90's.

NUDESWIRL/MONSTER MAGNET/ WHITE ZOMIBE at a club in Philly

MONSTER MAGNET/ DANDELION and MARILYN MANSON in Pittburgh.

Nudeswirl is another brilliant band.

Listen to that feedback! Most people don't even realize it is feedback. So good. When I saw them open for White Zombie in 1993, I wasn't paying much attention to them; I was just goofing off with friends. "Buffalo" was the third song they played, and that riff just hooked me.

I bought the CD the next day and it's been in heavy rotation ever since. Very few albums get played as much as this one does. It's fucking brilliant!

Sacrilege! You should be ashamed ;P

Monster Magnet aren't a bad band, but never one that's properly got me hooked. Maybe I've just heard the wrong handful of songs.

I'm new here so, "hi," and yes. Big MM fan.

Did you remedy that? I have all of their albums so I could make recommendations.

As for touring, it's easier to see them in Europe than the US. They're still popular over there but back home they play like two shows a year: one in NJ and one in the NYC area. Just saw them in Brooklyn at the Music Hall of Williamsburg where they played all of Dopes.

That's pretty accurate of their older stuff but their sound and style has changed with time. Their spacey stuff is more grounded these days.

Yeah, I've gradually been picking up their stuff, here and there.

Thanks for the reply!

I've always imagined "Space Lord" being about the Great Old Ones of the Cthulhu mythos.

I got into them because of Powertrip, of course, but I think Negasonic Teenage Warhead is probably my favorite, though Temple of Your Dreams is a contender for a slower piece. I only have those two on CD, and Superjudge on tape, but every now and then I get a monster nght and toll around youtube videos for a while. They do have it down when it comes to hook & riff.

as The Dude would say, do you think he has room for one more?

Into the Void is one of the best Black Sabbath songs; I'd love to hear MM's version.

Sho' do. =)

And yes, I have a spreadsheet with all my music listed. Or most of it. I'm sure I've failed to add a few things here and there.

I used to keep a list of all of the albums I owned but now that I've gone mostly digital I don't bother. I do still keep a list of the books I've read though.
