Running an eye over Mercedes's legs

Post by steven pirie on Sun Apr 10, 2011 5:15 am

Well, feet, to be more factual, but it got your attention, eh?

I clicked on Mercedes' blog, went away, came back and looked innocently at the banner with the high heels (and let's not worry that the shadow is biffing the other guy in the jaw for the moment). And being the sciency type, it struck me the forces on the toes and ankles can't be good for life and happiness. How do you women (and you men, for all I know :-) actually wear such shoes?

A question I've often wondered. It looks brutal.

Frankly, I've always found it a bit silly as well. Sure, it's a sexy look, but would you really reject an otherwise pleasant woman because she was wearing flats? Why ruin your feet for something that most guys can take or leave anyways?

That subject heading sure got my attention! And it's Mason that I'm biffing in the head. He's here on the forum somewhere. Razz

Amazingly, there are some heels that are actually very comfortable. (Verify that with Simon.) I wear heels enough that I can not only walk long distances in them, but I can literally run in four inch heels after my kids, if I need to. It's in the way that you distribute your weight on your hips. I also have an extremely high arch, so they're not nearly as uncomfortable for me as they might be for other women.

That said, I don't wear them all the time. If I'm going shopping for the day, I'm in flats. If I'm going to be at a casino where the floor is polished and insanely slippery, it's also flats. When I'm at home, I wear ballet style slippers. It's all about moderation.

And for me personally? It's also about confidence. I hit 5'9" tall in junior high, and I was taller than every guy in school, pretty much. I never wore heels! I totally slouched so I didn't look as tall. I later dated a guy who was angry when I wore heels because we'd be the same height. My husband, who is 5'11", isn't at all threatened when I wear them. They make me happy and he digs it. So they're a badge of courage that I wear with pride. I had to work hard to reach the point where I felt comfortable in them.

Plus, they're super hot. I dig 'em.

But any guy who rejects a woman for not wearing heels is a frickin' loser. Hands down. They're a woman's personal choice, only.

I'll add, too, that wearing heels is a learned skill. I used to have trouble with very high heels until I started dancing. Since I dance relevé most of the time, I've gotten used to bearing my weight solely on the balls of my feet. Now, 4" heels aren't a problem, but like Mercedes, I don't wear them all the time.

Hee hee, I knew you'd know I'd never be as crass as to really ogle a fellow forumite's legs. Not even Ken's. Laughing

I hadn't even considered the effect on the hips - probably makes me shudder even more at the thought of wearing such shoes. Still, they'd not suit my hairy legs :-)

I agree with Mercedes.
Before a few years ago, I hardly ever wore heels. Now I wear 2-3 inch ones often. They can be quite comfortable, if you get the right shoe. It is all in the balance.
But I don't wear them all the time either. At home I tend to go barefoot. I have regular tennis shoes for walking and flats for other times.
Really, though, a good pair of heels redistributes how you carry your weight. you tend to tuck in your tummy, straighten your back, and it makes your legs look longer.

I tried hard in my 20's. Really. I couldn't cut it for the most part. They were pretty much a given, with a job waiting cocktails I had for a time. I cheated and wore platforms. They give your legs the same look of length, look better with pants, all but the tailored tight-around-the-ankle type, and you can live in them.

I'm a high heel junkie. I admit it. High heeled boots, especially. I lurve my boots. I have a collection. They're prittyfuls.

For me, it has nothing to do with adding height - I'm cool with being an average height woman at 5'8". I just look and feel better in heels. Thick heels, stiletto style, doesn't matter. I wear them all and only because I like them. And I like the sound. That sharp click-click-click of heels on a tile/hardwood/whatever floor is a powerful sound. And when it's me making those powerful little click-click-clicks... I feel like one of those "I am woman, hear me frigging roar" type women.

And that's a good feeling.

It's also such a sign of femininity. While there are, of course, men who wear heels, it's still mainly a woman's thing. The click-click and the look is deliciously female.

And Seven, you're delightfully well-bred. I would expect nothing less of you. I think you should totally join me in ogling Ken's legs, though.

Sorry to tell you, Ef, but 5-8 ain't average for a woman. You're a good three inches in the positive there, girl.

Oh yeah, that. For sure. Boots. Boots and boots. Short and high. I loved to tuck my jeans inside the high ones. I was Wonder Woman. Put those boots on and you can do anything. No one's even going to think to try and stop you. Now I see my daughter adopting that same style and I think, What? Was I nuts? Never wear your boots at home, or at least share the broom. LOL But it sounds like you got the home parts figured.

Just walked in the door and kicked off my high-heeled boots. Thought of this thread and smiled.

One thing is becoming clear, that while I guess most men possess the same number of shoes as feet, for the female gender the type of footwear selected would seem as much an emotional/psychological issue as a comfort/practical one.

I know it's stereotypical, but other than perhaps the obvious colour matching thing (whereas my wellies go just as well with any suit I have :-), I never really understood why my wife needs so many shoes!

It's also becoming clear that women wear heels and boots for themselves instead of for men. I think society tends to think it's the opposite. Unless, of course, the ladies of ST march to the beat of a different drummer.

That's the point of the Van Morrison line. It's from "Wild Night".

"And all the girls walk by, dressed up for each other."

'Tis true...

Ha, it's totally true! I very much enjoy seeing what other women are wearing. I also love that a woman can say, "I love your shoes; they're fabulous!" to another woman and it brightens both their days. A man can't seem to say that as much without coming off as strange. I dig being a girl.

Oh and when you have something like a flat. If you are wearing heels it seems like people want to help you change a tire?? (may take advantage of this more often Wink )

OTOH, a girl I knew years back used to size up men's wealth by the footwear. I never paid the least bit of attention to their feet. That could have been where I went wrong, but the last I ran into her, she apologized. So, it remains a mystery.
