Shades of Poe-- A real life "Cask of Amontillado"

Post by Vincent on Fri Apr 01, 2011 3:19 am

Though this happened maybe a month ago, I was just put onto the story by a Romanian friend of mine.

Now, seems that in Romania, they build their public toilet blocks underground, accessible from street level by descending stairs. (I don't know about the rest of the world, but in Australia they are all above ground. Maybe this is part of the reason why). This story involves a disused one in a park that the city authorities decided to concrete over and forget about.

Yeah, you know where I'm going with this.

Luckily for the homeless man who was sleeping in it at the time, there was a taxi stand nearby, and that night the taxi drivers could hear his muffled knocks coming from below. Here's a news clip (in Romanian) of the effort to dig him free before his air ran out.

And yes, at the end of the clip those are seven puppies that were also found down there and rescued.

The construction company that did the work continue to insist that they made a thorough check of the structure before they concreted it over, just like they do every time they entomb alive homeless people and helpless puppies.

No way! My grandfather came from Romania. This guy could be a cousin.

As I watched the video, my heart was racing and all I could think was puppies, where are the puppies?!? Very Happy

That is indeed, rather crazy.

This is where claustrophobia begins.

It's like a weird mash-up.

Many years ago I was in Europe and was amazed to see public toilet here and there along the highways. Here we have oasis's with restaurants and toilets and parking areas, but these were just small out-type houses set up in the middle of the road. At the time, I couldn't imagine stopping to use one, much less going underground. How scary. Brings to mind a movie I saw with psychotic homeless teenagers. Can't think of the name.
