Total Long Shot

Post by Bordo on Mon Mar 28, 2011 9:58 pm

OK, I know this is a total long shot but I'm trying to track down a story that I read online about a year or two ago.

The conceit of the story was that, upon death, people don't go to Heaven or Hell but that those places come to you. Immediately after death everyone waits in a sort of odd purgatory which resembles the living world. Slowly, the world will change for each individual. People for whom the world becomes Hell are being punished not for what they did in life, but for all of the things they should have, but didn't.

The protagonist of this particular story is a man searching for his daughter in the afterlife. It turns out that his sin was not being the father that his troubled daughter needed at the time.

Like I said...it's a long shot that anyone has read the story but it's by far one of the best short stories I've ever read. I'd love to be able to read it again.

While it has many shade of Matheson's "What Dreams May Come", I don't think that's it...

Good call...it did have some similarities to What Dreams May Come but it was really, really dark but beautifully written.

Sounds nifty, let us know if you get a title. I'd like to track it down.

Shades of "Mr. Many Faces," by S. Clayton Rhodes, from issue #3.

It also reminds me of my cousin Eric's wake from a few years ago, when his own brother, a Jehovah's Witness, gave a speech that pretty much said Eric was not allowed into Heaven until God, or someone, came to get him. You see, my cousin committed suicide. But I'm pretty sure his brother is going to Hell for being a heartless asshole. He did this at the wake! Cold.

Anyway, I have no idea what the story is. Sorry.

Wow. At a wake. I've heard Bible-thumpers of various stripes say some uncouth crap, but that's a real low blow.

It was unbelievable. I hadn't seen this guy in years, probably about 15. He lives in NY now. We got along great as kids, but I really don't care to ever see him again.

Ken, you should have reminded him that JW's offer heaven only to 10,000 anyway. The rest remain right here, heaven on Earth, living in peace with all the animals. I'm guessing we all become vegetarian at that point.

Vegetarian? Man, suddenly the lake of fire doesn't seem so bad.

If I gotta be vegetarian, they better get crackin' on that squash that tastes like a New Your Strip. Some shrimp trees would be nice as well.
