Funny stuff

Post by EffieCollins on Tue Jan 04, 2011 9:00 pm

So, my sister-in-law recently located me on Facebook and after we'd added each other and all that, we were talking via messages. She was at work so no chat allowed, but we could message. She said one of her co-workers asked who I was and she answered "That's my sister". Coworker said, "Oh yeah... y'all look a lot alike."

So, what's funny about that? This girl is not only my husband's sister and not mine, but she's my husband's STEP-sister.

Shocked

So, a couple months ago, yahoo decided my email account was a spam account due to the amount of emails I sent in a single day. I was sending out several stories that day and quite a few personal emails.

I contacted yahoo about it, explaining that I was sending out stories to magazines and personal mails. I asked them to please release my account, because if one of the mags got back to me, I'd need to be able to contact them.

After about three weeks, I got tired of waiting and signed up on gmail. I've been slowly switching all my email addresses on places like duotrope, submishmash, GUD's submission form.

Now it's January... and I log into my yahoo account to see if I've had any replies to the stories I sent out. Thankfully, everyone responded with rejections, so I didn't need to worry about it anymore. I cleared my inbox out and, just for the hell of it... sent an email to my gmail address to see if I was still considered a spammer.

When I checked a couple weeks ago, I was still blocked from sending messages on yahoo.

Today, I can apparently send messages.

My personal account in a yahoo account, but I do all of my professional stuff through gmail. It took some getting used to, but I don't have nearly the problems that I did with yahoo.

Haha, you're a spammer! Razz

I plan to use gmail for writing related purposes (submissions, beta reading/critiquing etc.) and just keep yahoo a personal email from now on. I won't be sending any more subs through them, that's for sure.

A few days ago, my youngest son walked up to me. This was our conversation.

"Mom?"
"Yeah bug?"
"Need you to buy me somethin."
"Whatcha need?"
"One of those things with the big blade on it that you drop down and cut stuff with."
"A guillotine?"
"Yep. That's it."
"Why do you want a guillotine for?"
He grins at me and says: "It'd just be cool to have one."

My kids are awesome.

Yes kids are awesome.

My youngest has decided he needs to learn to play the base. Since they are a bit more expensive than the beat up guitar that my oldest got for his b-day, I told him no. The child hen pulls out all his Christmas money and asks, "Will this be enough?" *sigh* If I find one cheap I'll buy it. Sill think he needs to learn to play a 6 string first.

Oldest has gotten into an odd habit. A big hug out of the blue. When asked why, he just says. "Cause I love you" unsure

Oh man... bass players can rock out just as hard as your standard electric or acoustic 6-string.

An Ibanez bass is a small and good alternative for kids and Momma's pocket. Around 200 bucks, yeah, but it's a decent quality guitar and much cheaper than a 600$ Fender 4 string or a 1200$ Gibson LOL. Ibanez makes good guitars. I like the look and how easily it fits in smaller hands... great woman's guitar, great kid's guitar. I dislike getting guitars specifically made for kids... they outgrow them too quick. A good guitar is an investment and will last for years. The smaller fret board is great because unless one has monster-size hands, you don't really outgrow them either. Washburn's are good guitars too, but they're more expensive than Ibanez. Around 500 for a good bass.

That website, musician's friend... awesome website. You can find crazy good deals there - I know a couple people who buy from them.

I really wish I could Sad but that kind of money isn't in my pocket right now. I'll have to settle with what I can get. Maybe next year. *sigh*

the goblin was delighted, saying "...yay, another human who's writing in her posts, and she's good too, should I let be, or just comment from time to time...", and with this goblin somehow knew that the others would join in now, saying "...blogs are so cold, aren't they humans, but not threads, ah no these threads are hot because we share them together...", and with that the goblin just fell quiet for a while looking forward to the next post, adding "...this thread will get more hits to it than your blog ever did, or will for that matter, and many a time I've tried to tell you humans too, perhaps now you'll believe me now for here was a taste of things to come..."

Actually, a bass player can almost always find a gig. There are thousands of people who want to play lead guitar, but not as many people play the bass.

You might check your local pawn shops. Just make sure you are somewhat hip to the cost of things before you go in there. A lot of pawn shops have no clue about the quality of instruments, so they can be really pricey or really cheap, depending. If you have one of those "phones" that you can surf the web with, I'd pull up Musician's Friend while you are looking and price check them.

Italics added are my added emphasis... because it's so true. A good bassist is never going to be looking for someone to jam with. Same with rhythm guitarists (which is what I play... have no real ear for leading licks). And bass guitars are sexy. Smile

And I'll echo looking at pawn shops. If you can't net from your phone... take some pictures and ask me. Just make sure they are good detail - I'd need to see the plate on the back of the neck and, if acoustic, the brand stamp inside the guitar. Pictures of the tuning keys would be good... as long as they're all in the photo and it shows down to the nut (little plastic thing the strings stretch over) and the bridge/bridge saddle would be good... just so you can know ahead of time if it has manufacturer's parts or if something has been replaced. A side shot of the tuning keys would be helpful too. I'd be willing to help you find something suitable that won't hurt your pocket.

Hell, I'd almost give you the 200 bucks to get him a bass. Bass players are hardcore... I've heard some bass players that rival lead guitarists in their own band. Sad they get so little attention.

Hi goblin! This isn't exactly what you and Jats are doing... more just like a place to share the silly shit that happens in my everyday life that no one gives two hoots about LOL!

Oh and hey, y'all... when you get a chance, take a look at my new profile pic on FaceBook and let me know what you think. I love the picture and am thinking of adopting it as my author photo instead of the "cheesy smile" one I have now.

J would pick up the bass like wildfire. He already plays trumpet, some keyboards and can play a few songs on the harmonica he got for Christmas. He loves music, picks up things by ear amazingly quickly.
However, I can't get him something nice like that when I picked up Z's guitar at a yard sale for $10 (Yes that cheap old acoustic that has a chip out of the front but everything else is fine) Z has picked up cords by ear, and can play a little, but doesn't have the drive for it Sad If the darn boy would learn to strum and build up some callouses he'd be fine.
Would be a hella fight between the boys if I went and did something like that right now. And a lot of hurt feelings. Maybe this summer things will change. I hope so

I can understand that. It would bring on more contention than it was worth.

For what it's worth, I hope so too... and if you need help when/if the time comes, just give me a yell.

I hear you there girl. It's not like it used to be... even if one spouse has a 60k a year income (which is pretty low for some professions) a family can't make it with just the one income.

You can make it, but you have to give up a LOT. I have only the basics of anything. I don't go out, luckily I don't smoke or drink much. and to give you an idea of what I make a year, 30 hrs X $10 so not raking in the dough. I have food stamps and medicade for the boys. Otherwise, I'd be living with my parents *shudder*

Hey, we do what we gotta do to make it, girl. I've been on assistance a couple of times before and my kids still have state medical insurance.

Though I do live with my mother. She needs me here, so what was "Me and my family can't make it alone" became "My mom can't do without me anymore". If not for her disability and my husband's income, such as it is now that he's back doing side work, we'd probably be in state housing. Tough times, dear. It'll get better for you. You'll see.

I absolutely adore you two.

We live on my husband's income, and it takes a lot more ingenuity than people would think. I'm always looking for ways to scale back a bit. Right now I'm looking into ditching the land line for Magic Jack. We should totally have a Shock Totem Frugaity thread. Wink
