No idea. It kind of put me off The Road at first, though.

I had a similar reaction when I read The Orchard Keeper a couple of years ago. That was the first McCarthy novel I read--didn't care for it, by the way--but found as I read a couple more of his books I got used to the style.

Still. It's an acquired taste.

I've tried, but I've found it too hard to acquire.

Ketchum drove me nuts with his lack of comma use at first. I got used to it, though. Haven't read McCarthy yet. But...apostrophes? Really? Like, he writes dont instead of don't? That's not style; that's retarded! Haha.

I like Ketchum and McCarthy.

I hate commas and apostrophes.

McCarthy's not too big on quotation marks either, as I recall.

I'm a constant abuser of the comma, but no apostrophes? That's just weird.

Cormac McCarthy is one of my favorites. It took a bit to get used to his writing style, but once I did his narrative flow grabs hold of me and doesn't let go.

Yeah. But it's weird: he'll write "dont" but words like "we'll" and "he'd" retain apostrophes. It seems like there's a rough science to it, where any negative contraction loses an apostrophe.

I don't really mind it, I just thought it was an odd stylistic choice, and I'm not sure why he decided to do it that way. Like in the future after we're all dead, they're gonna drop apostrophes from the language.

I love CM. I find I jsut gotta get into McCarthy mode once I begin reading his books.

*Helpful Tip #666: If the lack of punctuation irks anyone, borrow an unabridged audiobook of any McCarthy title and you won't have to see 'em!

Can't help it guys. To me it's just pretentious. (notice the apostrophes in the preceding sentences). He's shouting out, "Look at me. I'm a speshul snowflake. I'm different. I can do things any way I want. I don't need your steenkin' rules. I make my own. 'Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!'”

Bullshit.

Okay, the guy writes a good story. I don't care. I won't be reading any more of them. There are way more good stories out there that I don't have to struggle to try to read. There are more than I can possibly read in a lifetime. Once I'm done with all of them maybe I'll give him a shot again.

I couldnt agree more he does it because he can say to people look at me I don't use punctuation so that makes me a literary and shit I will admit that the guy tells a great story but I have a very tough time getting over his artful lack of correct punctuation Hell half the time i can't remember who the hell is speaking I don't fault people for liking him as its a matter of taste but hes not for me

I also love when people who enjoy his writing try to tell me that I'm just not "open-minded" or "literate" enough to "get it." I see this type of punctuation daily from some of my near-illiterate high school students (try convincing me that they're doing it to be "artistic").

I tried The Road, I could not get into it because of his bizarre "style." I have very definite ideas about a writer's style, it should be almost invisible. Meaning, it should never take you out of the story. My personal opinion is that the writer's job is to convince the reader of the reality of the tale. And anything that jars the reader out of the story is bad writing in my book. So yes, go ahead and shoot me, I think that makes McCarthy a bad writer. But he manages to do stuff that would prevent most of us from being publish and convince the public it's "literary." More power to him.
