The Shock Totem Migraine Society

Post by Shiney on Thu Jul 29, 2010 3:55 pm

Who gets 'em?

What are they like for you?

I ask as I just talked to another Totemite and discovered she gets them too and her symptoms are unique...

I know, Mercedes sufefrs from them as well....who else?

Smile

I will confess, I'm the Totemite with the weird symptoms. I get sparkly lights (I call them chaos lights) in my left eye that let me know a migraine is on its way. They start in a small circle and get bigger and bigger until they disappear out of my line of sight. The lights make everything blurry, but again, they only appear in my left eye. I have a freakishly high tolerance to pain, so it's not the pain that gets me, but the resulting fatigue and frequently I get a fever and chills, too.

When the lights start, I pop Excedrin Migraine (it works better than anything my doc has prescribed), climb in bed with eyes closed and the covers over my head to shut out the external sensory input, and wait it out.

I too suffer from them.

Damien I have weird symptoms also. I usually get flashes like little fire crackers, then this weird line. It is just thick enough to make things weird and looks like a TV that is not picking up a signal. It will go through my line of sight, sometimes vertically or horizontally. Then the headache starts. Excedrin Migraine works well, along with a big bottle of Mt. Dew.

Thing is, a lot of migraines can be prevented by learning what your triggers are. Mine are stress, dehydration, certain perfumes, light patterns and high amounts of caffeine. My youngest sister has controlled hers by not having caffeine at all.

Since I have gotten new glasses I have not had as many. I do not have them often maybe 3-4 times a year.

Mine are no doubt stress induced.

I don't get any warning visual cues...I get smells...an odd antispeticy band aid sort of smell sometimes....or sometimes like a hot metal smell...then the ach starts in the back of my head and travels to the front and my eye (usually left) will twitch until I go lay down.

I take Aleve for them unless they are super evil then I dip into the prescription bottle....

they suck ass!

Try the excedrin Migraine. Caffeine, asprin and Tylenol. Great combination

I totally OD on caffiene......everyday. I get up and eat a yogurt....then usually eat little or nothing until the evening meal...but I must drink at least a 6 pack of 20 oz Diet Pepsis between the feedings.

I live so very healthy.

You know, that might be part of your problem. Carbonated drinks dehydrate you. Anything with caffeine will dehydrate you in fact.

I don't know if they are migraines, I've never gone to the doctor for them... but I do get extreme headaches that lay me out for days on end. I've lain in bed for three to four days with these headaches.

They start in my forehead just above my eyes and slowly spread all over until my head feels like it's gonna explode.

I can't stand to have the overhead on, so I go with my lamp and cover my head with a blanket. Sound isn't too bad (I've heard these are traditional migraine symptoms). Regular ibuprofen or tylenol won't cut it. Most times percocet won't even cut it. I normally just have to wait for them to go away. I love excedrine migraine, but they do nothing for my cluster-fuck headaches (my term for them).

I'm this way, but it's coffee instead of soda. I go through 6-8 pots of coffee a day. Yes, pots, not cups. And I eat maybe twice a day... at about 7 at night and again at around 9 (this is usually something light...a salad or fruit or some such notion).

Mine don't last more than a few hours, either.

And unfortunately migraines are usually hereditary. Both parents have them, my brother and youngest sister and both of my boys have them. Strangely everyone has different symptoms. Sad

See, that's why I don't think mine are migraines. I dunno wtf they are, but they suck majorly. My mom gets migraines, but hers are so different that I don't think mine are the same at all.

As far as I know....I was the first in my family to get them. Or maybe I was just the first to whine about them...

My oldest son (12) gets them occasionally, he got them often when he was little..but the older he gets the less frequent they become.

His symptoms were different from mine. He'd get one almost instantly....and within 30 minutes was puking all over the place. that was pleasant.

Hey, my mom pukes with hers too. She gets some violent headaches. My mom is like me--not much actually hurts, it's more discomfort. But she gets migraines so bad that she actually whimpers with them.

My little girl is prone to headaches, but they aren't very severe. My husband has problems with tension headaches, but I get rid of them fairly quick with a deep tissue neck massage.

I believe mine is because I absolutely refuse to wear my glasses. I look like shit in glasses. I won't do it. (I have very few vanities. Glasses is the biggest one. I can handle my frizzy as hell hair, but not glasses.)

I had prescription migraine meds but I felt like my head was cloudy and my body was dying, so I switched to Excedrin Migraine and it's so much better!

I get halos and what looks like shooting stars in my peripheral vision. Sometimes they start right in my line of sight (it looks like snow, sometimes, only it blow up and every which way) and then I know that I'm going to be hit super hard. I throw up pretty much every time that I have one. Ugh, death.

I never get headaches. I never get sick.

I'll die in the most absurd way, I'm sure.

Interesting thread!

I used to get them. I say used because for about 11-12 years now I carry a little pill bottle full of ibuprofen with me every where I go. At the first sign I pop 4 and hydrate. I've learned what my triggers are and either avoid or prepare.

Overhead flourescent lights were a big cause, and I got them when I was a student.

I'd get nauseous, have blurred vision and occassionaly vomit.

I remember the only thing I could do was turn off all lights, eliminate all sound, put a pillow over my head and just lay there and pray for it to be over.
