Midnight Meat Train
Anyone see this yet? If your cable company offers FEAR.net on On Demand, they're showing the movie for free right now.
I watched it this weekend and it was pretty good. The acting was great, the direction was just as good. The butcher was played by the decidedly creepy, English badass Vinnie Jones. That dude is the perfect villian. The kill scenes were gruesome enough without being lame gore. I'd give it a C+ maybe B-. I wasn't blown away, but I wasn't bored by any means.
The ending is where it fails, if you ask me. It's too abrupt. It doesn't have the pacing of a book, where there's a build-up. In the movie, the ending just flops out of the sky and into your lap. And then it's done. A little more foreshadowing and suspense before the end would have made it a lot better.
The scariest part might have been Clive Barker's intro. He looks sickly. Maybe it was a lack of good make-up/bad lighting, I don't know, but he looked like shit. The movie is worth checking out, though.

I know Barker has battled throat cancer in the past...maybe he is ill again, or having adverse effects to medication....
Have you read the short story this film is based on, Ken?

Midnight Meat Train
I just rented this over the weekend, and overall I was pretty impressed. It's no instant classic for sure, but it has just the right mix of gore, suspense and characterization. It's been years since I've read the Books of Blood, so I can't say to what extent it sticks to Barker's story, but it held my interest more than most modern horror films I've seen lately.

I love that story, more so when he gets into the tunnels near the end and sees "The father/Mother" and is given his tools for his new job...
Does the movie go that far or mainly just stick to the subway murders and feasting by the dwellers?

The transformation into the servant of "whatever it is" is only at the end. Ten minutes, tops.
I don't recall the story at all and don't know where my Barker books are... *sigh*

Ooh...we can merge threads here. Why don't they ever do that on HoM? We use the same forum software.

I don't even have the excuse of forgetting to use the search function, the room isn't even up to two pages yet.
