Perfume: The Story of a Murderer

Post by Mercedes on Thu Jun 10, 2010 2:17 am

I'm reading this right now, and I totally dig. Has anybody read it? Seen the movie?

I read this years ago. This was written by a German author, right? Patrick Susskund or something like that. I suppose I should Google this information before I post anything, but...

I remember the basic plot, about a killer with an extraordinary sense of smell who creates perfumes that bring out primal responses in others. I do remember I enjoyed the read.

I was reading this aloud to my husband on a road trip, and I tell you that I have never been so grateful that I took so many years of French.

Yep, that's the one! Patrick Suskind. It's literary and very lovely. Thus far, it's written more like an olfactory love story than anything else. I can honestly say that I haven't read anything quite like it before.

I adored the book, and yes, I completely agree with you. It's such a unique story.

Too bad we aren't neighbors, Shiney. When it's cool enough, sometimes I sit outside and read to the neighbor kids. You could join up.

Mercedes is going to be one of the old ladies who bakes the neighbor kids cookies and reads them stories...and then shoves them in an oven for dinner!

Just the loud and annoying neighborhood children. Which are all of them. Wink

I sometimes read to the neighbor kids too. Of course, I read to them out of the Necronomicon. That usually doesn’t end well. It’s funny, but no, not very well at all.

Brian reading from the Necronomicon:

"Hello boys and girls...it's reading time with Uncle Brian! Oh, don't be afraid...didn't your mother ever tell you not to judge a book by it's cover? Okay, so who wants to go to hell first--I mean, who wants to help me read first?"

I read the first chapter or two and promptly got distracted by the real world.

Good first chapter though, I should get back to it.

I read this a number of years ago. I thought it was very good. I was less impressed with the movie, however.

Mercedes:

It's been a little while since I saw the film. I think the movie just loses a lot of the more complex and/or subtle aspects of Grenouille that you get from the book. The way language is used in the book, the thoughts of Grenouille, the way the author is able to pull the reader along through the story - that's hard to reproduce in a movie. From what I remember, I thought the director did a decent job of it early on, but it kind of degenerated from there into a series of killings that don't have nearly the impact or significance of the written work, and an ending that seems almost preposterous given the lack of the filmmakers to set the stage for it in the way the author manages to do in the written version.

That makes sense. There's so much description and so little dialogue in the book that I wondered how it would translate onscreen. And it's so cheesy to do constant voice overs to explain what the characters are thinking. It looked visually lovely, though. I was almost tempted to watch it.

It's worth watching. It's just not nearly as satisfying as the book, and you'll probably be disappointed in it. But the cinematography is great, it's true.
