Resuming a dormant WIP

Post by blood_n_barricades on Sun Jun 06, 2010 8:22 pm

Hey guys!

Last November, I wrote 53,000 of a novel for NaNoWriMo and about three days into December, stopped writing it and haven't really touched it since then. It's a dark dystopian story set in Melbourne after a severe economic crisis causes a kind of apocalyptic situation, termed the 'econopocalypse.' I love the general story but it will probably need a rewrite. I just need to finish the draft.

Do you have any advice for resuming an old WIP? Do you read through the whole thing? The last couple of chapters? Just start writing? Start again?

Honestly, I'd say simply take the manuscript, set it front of you, and start from the beginning, using the original as nothing but a guide. That's what I've done with old work, and it seems to succeed much better than picking up where I left off or trying to edit what I have written. But that's me.

I usually do well with a quick read-through to get me back into the voice and flow of the story. Then I pick up where I left off, unless the story really jumped the shark somewhere along the line.

What are you planning on doing with it?

I agree with Mercedes,

Pick it up and see where it leads.
I also make notes in the margains as I go. Places that I have better insights on, or new idea.

Good Luck

I sit down with the story and a pen, and see how much work needs to be done.

It's just a first draft so I'll probably rewrite it from scratch once I get to the end.

The WIP I was working on was from NaNo Ben, and I ended up starting over, but Mercedes is right... there is no harm in seeing where things are for you at the moment and see if you can save it first... then go forth with a rewrite if you don't think you can.
