Music player?

Post by Tall Tyrion on Sat Jun 05, 2010 4:00 pm

All that is on my new comp is a truncated version of Nero and WMP. I have always used Real Player in the past, but I haven't been overly fond of it lately, so I'm thinking of switching programs for organizing and playing music on my comp. Any suggestions?

VLC Media Player is pretty awesome. It'll play just about anything and has an awesome equalizer... but it's not much for organization. I use itunes some, but I mostly just use WMP because my baby nephew likes the crazy graphics. VLC works great if you listen to music while you're on the internet, though. Some media players bog down my net really bad.

WMP sucks balls! The shuffle feature is terrible. It'll never shuffle from B to X, or whatever. It's always A to C, then C to E, then E to A, then A to D. It sucks. In fact, I kept clicked Skip the other day, and it would never go past letter I. And I pressed Skip at least a hundred times! Pffft!

I've learned that iTunes is great, but it's a memory hog.

I use a program called Poddox for my iPod. It loads mp3s on there and nothing else. I love it.

Winamp is good.

Media Monkey is good.

J. River is very good, especially using ASIO drivers. It's not free, but not exorbitant either.

I don't do MP3. So my criteria might be different than yours.

I have used Media Monkey in the past. It's great for certain things, but it has a tendency to take over everything like iTunes. It's a powerful program for sure, though.

I ended up finding a program called Cowan and it seems to be OK, although it's not perfect.

None are.

It would be nice if you could find programs tailored to your particular use instead of trying to do everything. But alas...

I have around 250 CD's (and counting) ripped as lossless WAV files onto my PC and like the convenience of doing play lists and random mixes. I either send the signal to my living room system or listen at my computer desk via headphones. It works well.

But I don't need the video capabilities offered, or the MP3/iPod stuff, so there's a lot of unused features.

I'm also starting to get into high-res stuff that exceeds CD quality (a few titles; it's tough to find much but classical and jazz right now, but the list grows daily) and computer-based is the best way to do that.

The more I get into audio as a hobby, the more I realize that I need to either start writing best-sellers or win the lottery.

Very Happy

My main problem is file management. WMP is stupid to find files. It always shows random albums on my playlist, and will not show others that I had just used it to rip to the hard drive. Very frustrating.

I actually dig iTunes. My PC is a bit too old for it at this point so it can be a bit annoying when it freezes, but I've learned to move around slowly when using it. I dig it, though.

It's great if your soul is for sale.

All the things that kept me from using it before were either not true or changed. The big one being that iTunes converts all your MP3s and add DRM nonsense to them. Doesn't work like that. The only thing it ever asks to convert is WMA files, which makes sense.
