I'm sorry, but I think I'm an idiot...

Post by Guest on Fri May 28, 2010 12:06 pm

So, I'm almost done with something I really want to submit to you guys. But for the love of all that is horrifying, I find it difficult to understand one of your submission guidelines.

"Do not double-space after a period."
... Yeah, and its very frustrating on my part that I don't get this very simple instruction.

Does it mean as simple as that? I keep my lines double-spaced, but single it when the last sentence ends with a period?

Well, some help? And thanks in advance!

Oh, and, you guys rock!

It simply means to not hit the space bar twice after a period. I think I'll delete that rule anyway, because I've since figured out if I do a Find/Replace All, I can put the double space in one field and the single space in the other, and it'll change them all.

Maybe an even stupider question...

What is the problem with a double-space after the period? Asking honestly, here.

I know the practive dates back to manual typewriters, which I only used for a short period of time. But for some reason I can't break myself of the habit of double-spacing after my sentences. My thumb's a bit of a spaz when it comes to that.

Do double-spaces cause formatting problems when the text is converted?

Thanks, Amanda. Interesting article, even if it is an arbitrary debate. The comments are pretty funny. I'm probabl one that will never break my thumb of the habit. But maybe auto-correct (and trying to remember to find & replace) can help.

I've thought about it and I know why I do it (besides habit). It's partially a piece of the thought process as I write - either emails / dcumentation at work, or stories. Each sentence shold be important in it's own right, and thus each sentence a separate thought (more or less). So the extra thump on the space bar creates that beat between thoughts in my head.

Either that or I'm just talking crap and making excuses. Laughing

Actually, I can think of several reasons why I do it at work. But that's irrelevant, since I learned learned the habit in the first place by writing stories.

Re-reading this, there is so many wrong turns this questions can take.

For manuscript I still use double space after every period...for the reason that a manuscript is not a finished work. For the same reason we double space our lines in a manuscript, the extra space, to me, allows the editor room to edit. Simple as that. Of course, when it comes time to print the finished version (if you're lucky enough to get your manuscript accepted and published...after it's been torn apart by Ken and pieced back together again!), then, yes, take those ugly spaces out.

Although, since there's a lot of online publishing nowadays (not to date myself or anything), I can understand why editors would want "publish-ready" manuscripts. Because they're lazy and want the authors to do all the work!!!! Wink

Seriously, though, much a do about nothing. Leave us double-spacers alone. We're a dying breed. Much like real book publishers.

I might be kicked off of staff for this, but I still double space. It's tough to break 20 years of habit. Find/replace is a good friend!

I'm with you, Mercedes. As far back in school as I can remember, I was taught to double space after a period. Trying very hard to break that habit now. I never realized there was so much animosity toward those of us that still do.

It remembering to find & replace that's going to be tough. Though probably not as tough as not double-spacing would be.

I was taught to type in the 80's, where we were told double-spacing was the correct practice. I only broke that habit recently, about a year ago, and now it's finally stuck.
