Interesting comment by Mercredebs over at Cate's blog - does it mean the totem slush monkeys (sorry Mercredebs :-) read submissions anonymously?

It does make it sound that way, but the author's name is on every submission. I'm assuming Ms. Mercedes just didn't pay attention to the name. I often don't.

I often don't either....I read the story then read the info.

I read them anonymously so that I'm not swayed either way. It's a personal choice. Usually it's because I'll read a cover letter, think the author sounds like a total tool, and then automatically dismiss their story.

Kidding. Sort of. If I *do* read the cover letter first, I usually come back to the story later when I've forgotten everything. It's easy; it all begins to blur pretty quickly.

The names and cover letters do come with every story, but it's simple to page down and hit the story link without seeing the info.

Reading anonymously would be awesome, but I honestly don't think we can be swayed, regardless of the author.

I'm just surprised your slush monkeys are okay with being called slush monkeys

(Note to self: no point in ever submitting to Shock Totem.)

Not true... just make sure it's good. We don't accept trunk stories just 'cause we like you.

Well, fancy that, there is such a thing as a slush monkey.

Actually, my thoughts were from the other way, that as I'd reviewed ST and am a (fairly) active member of the forum, I have a kind of albeit tenuous history with ST, and I'm not sure I'd be that confortable submitting. I don't know whether such a sentiment makes much sense or not. I was thinking that if you were reading semi-anonymously then that supposed problem goes away.

I think I see your point. You would not want any unfair advantage?

I felt exactly this way. I've been hanging out for a good while now (not as long as you but still) and was just uncomfortable. I sent my first sub in... last week? I think it was. And when I finally did sub something, I forgot the attachment, of course. I always mess up something on a submission when I'm nervous about it.

That's an insta-reject for you, little lady.

Kidding, of course. We might gripe when peeps don't follow the guidelines, but it doesn't disqualify you if the story rocks.

Well, I re-sent the story. And if I'm not mistaken, I'd even read Ken's posts about the thing with no attachments (and I know its in the guidelines to just resend... I've read them about a hundred times, biting my nails and wondering if maybe... nope not yet... well, maybe this one... nah that one sucks, ah screw it, I'll wait and write something else and send it when I have the balls). I felt pretty sillified, I must admit.

That's cool. I totally get the nervous feeling about a sub, and then to have to do it again because you've missed something... scary.

EVERYONE forgets the attachments. It's RIDICULOUS! Haha. Sometimes people reply with "Sorry. Forgot the attachment last time. Here it is again, with attachment." Then a minute later another e-mail comes in, "FUCK! I did it AGAIN!" Haha. It's awesome.

I hold it against no one; I do it myself far more often than I'd like to admit. I think the problem is that people need to attach the story first. Most probably intend to do it after they've written up the e-mail, then just forget. It's too easy to sign your name and then hit Ctrl-Enter, you know. I send so many e-mails, it's just too great a habit.

So attach your story first. I should take my own advice, too.
