Just saw SURVIVAL OF THE DEAD

Post by Brian Sammons on Sat May 01, 2010 12:51 pm

And if you have any love or fond memories of Romero as a filmmaker or his previous Dead flicks then do yourself a big favor and avoid this movie like the rancid turd that it is. Hell, even if you donít know who Romero is and never saw a zombie movie in your life, still donít waste your time with this flick. Itís bad, people. Really, shamefully BAD! It made Diary of the Dead look like Dawn of the Dead. Yeah, thatís bad.

So, anyone else see this cinema crapfest?

Is it a law that zombie movies have to be called "X OF THE DEAD"? Really, people, creativity.

Sorry, I read the post wrong. Though I swear there are crappy non-Romero zombie movies with the "of the Dead" suffix.

Those are remakes of franchise entries...or "tributes" like SHAUN....

Night of the Living Dead and the original Dawn of the Dead are classics of horror. They are, as the well-worn phrase goes, "often imitated but never duplicated". This is true for even George Romero. Day of the Dead, while having potential with a couple of plotlines, degenerates into an impressive but predictable gorefest at the end. Land of the Dead and Diary of the Dead? Those two movies were nothing more than Romero looking for his next paycheck. There is no reason to believe that Survival of the Dead will be any better, and Brian is letting us know it's not. David Cronenberg has reinvented himself as a director, with impressive results. Romero should give it a shot.

Great point, Argentus. Romero desperately needs to do something new. Or hell, keep doing horror, just go back to doing good, non-zombie horror. I would love to see another Creepshow or a Martian by him. Hell Iím so desperate Iíd even take a new Monkey Shines right about now. But not Bruiser, thatís still right out.

I thought BRUISER had a nifty concept....just poorly executed, but it was better than KNIGHTRIDERS or whatever that turd was called....

I'm going to watch Survival just because I've seen all the others. I know I won't enjoy it, but....I....just....have to.

Night, Dawn and Day will forever remain in my top ten movies of all time. They were great then, they still are now.

Land wasn't great, Diary was so bad I could only watch it in segments. And that's sad. The first three were just so wonderful - I think Romero is spending too much time trying to squeeze subtle social commentary into the new ones that it just smacks you in the face. With Land it was about denial and irony, Diary was about the YouTube generation, and fuck knows what he's done with Survival.

It should have stopped at Day. AND ANOTHER THING: I wish he'd had the budget to do Day as was originally scripted. I think that mother would have been huge.

George, my friend, please just sit down and leave the zombies be. I'm willing to forget everything after Day, if you'll just put the camera down. Please. The horse is dead - quit flogging.
