March Contest

Post by Gioclair on Mon Mar 29, 2010 5:33 pm

Wasn't the end of March the deadline for voting?

But I can't access the March Contest forum anymore.

What happened? Did I miss something?

Was the 22nd. I spaced it, myself.

Silly me! It really was involuntary.

A publisher wrote, asking for my ms. I forgot eating and sleeping for two weeks...

But I had already commented on 31 stories! Arrrrgghhhhh!

Yep, the deadline was the 22. Those who didn't vote were removed from the forum. This month is everybody's first warning. The next time that people people don't vote, there will be a three month ban from the contest. It isn't fair that people should read, critique, and vote on somebody's story and not have that returned to them.

So now we know...and knowing is half the battle.

This is a public service announcement. Razz

But there was no reminder near the deadline, was it?

I'll send my comments on Wednesday as scheduled by my distracted mind. I guess the author may still be interested. So the one day and a half spent critiquing won't be lost.

Well, there were many reminders in the general discussion thread, but there were no "official" reminders sent out. That shouldn't be necessary. The deadline was clearly stated in the Contest Entries thread: "You must PM those to Mercedes by midnight on March 22."

If you've written feedback for the other authors, PM it to me. I'm sure the authors would love more feedback. And if you do send feedback, we can grant access to the forum again so you receive your feedback.

Unfortunately, like Merc said, in the future we'll have to take a firmer stance.

Noted. Apologies to the authors I didn't finish with, but I'll send you what comments I had made.

Just to be clear. Feedback is not required. We simply figure if you're reading the stories—which you should be in order to vote fairly—then it shouldn't be hard. But again, not required. Voting is, however. This month's winner won by one vote. Four people failed to vote. That could have made a difference in the outcome, you know.

So voting is what's truly important.

We get lots of reminder for voting this month (I'm voting for the Locus awards just now--surely I would have forgotten, too, given the editing binge). It's my meesteak, all right, but still, if I were hosting a contest, I would ring the bell at least once. Because maybe a few participants didn't comply for the same reasons, too much work and distraction, not because they didn't want to play by the rules or because they didn't care.

Not to sound like a jerk, but we're too busy to babysit. If an author needs a reminder to meet a deadline, then it should be their responsibility to set that reminder.

Sorry. Given my current level of busyness, it was my mistake to participate. Won't happen again.
