Good old Frank. I feel this sudden need to break into song "Had a girl, and she sure was fine. She was fine, fine, fine."

Effie, you know they probably think we're nuts, don't you? Wink

There's an article floating round

Could this be it? link: Death of the Slushpile

It's a decent article, and my main concern is that it's from a journalist who's only managed to get one book published, and she's writing it from the viewpoint of her experience with her own publisher.

And she doesn't boost her credibility by blaming the start of the death of slushpiles on 911 and the anthrax posting scares. It's a poor causal link. Any reduction in slushpile reading was probably due more to failing worldwide economies than fear of anthrax in emails or someone flying a plane into your PO box. (Ask Ken--I bet his slushpile for Totem is fat and bulging. And anthrax free.)

Yeah, yeah, yeah, some publishers are going agented-only. But check out Ralan.com and you'll find plenty who aren't...and a frequent closed to subs because they're overloaded or about to close up shop. Sadly, that's the sort of thing the best agent in the world can't overcome.

Oh no doubt about Ralan's etc. I think this article is probably focusing on the big houses. They basic gist is that a JK Rowling or the Twilight thing won't happen again without it...no big deal.

The best advice I heard on the whole JK Rowling thing and new authors with big aspirations was this: It'll happen again, just not to you.

That made me chuckle.

NB: I should add that last time I looked Leisure Fiction still took unsolicited subs. They're probably one of the bigger genre publishers. Pretty much all the big horror writers have been through there at some point.

Cheers
Rich

If I'm unable to find an agent willing to take on my MS, I may try the publishers who take unagented subs. But I'm currently writing a dark, edgy YA horror tale, and given the popularity of the YA genre right now, I might have better luck finding an agent with that one. I'm keeping all my options open at this point. Smile

I never planned to write a YA tale, but I wrote a short story, and the character just kept talking...

the character just kept talking

That's the best when it happens that way. Very Happy Makes me feel all gooshy inside. Good luck with it!

As for the previous statements...

I think that there is something that being overlooked as well. The statistics for an agent actually picking up a query are slim to none, so the fact that you have multiple agents interested is more than amazing ya know?

In Writers Market they say that 2% of agents queried respond to said writers. Nathan Bransford just posted a "stats" thing on his blog showing he only picked 5% of the queries he got sent. Which ended up being like 3 out of some crazy number.

Either way you slice it D, you're way ahead of the game. I'm sure you're proud of yourself and you should be. Keep up the great work and best of luck to you!

Exciting and nerve-wracking at the same time! My MS passed the first round at one agency and has been sent up the food chain, so I'm keeping my fingers and toes crossed.
