Random Bits of Goodish News

Post by dgrintalis on Tue Jan 26, 2010 5:45 am

I've gotten 18 agent requests for either fulls or partials of my manuscript, Ink. One agent wanted an exclusive which I could not grant, so he told me to send the MS to him if the other agents pass with no need to re-query first. I've had 2 agents ask for info on any other projects I have, which was very cool because I have 6 other WIPs in various states of progress. Smile Last week an agent emailed me just to tell me she was enjoying the MS. I was bouncing off the walls the rest of the day - she is a dream agent. Another agent who I sent the query to plus the first 10 pages (per her guidelines) sent a note that 'she was hooked' when she asked for a 100-page partial, and today, I got a partial request from an agent at the Ralph Vicinanza Agency. I admit it, I squealed like a little girl when I opened the email. I am walking around in a perpetual state of pins and needles. And I finished the first draft of my tale, Paper Tigers, about a disfigured woman and a haunted photo album a few nights ago.

Life is good.

I am really amazed that I've gotten so many requests; horror is such a tough sell these days.

That's awesome. Sending good vibes your way - though it sounds as if you don't need them.

You send along belly dancing pics with every query don't you? Uh-huh. Just as I thought.

No, that's really great. Congratulations!

You know, I just went to her website and there's like 400 belly-dancing pics. You have to keep clicking links like SEE MORE and CLICK HERE FOR BIBLIO...WOW! HOT! and OMG! SEE IT JIGGLE! and a bunch of other things, well before you get to her "author" stuff.

It's genius, really.

I could see a scenario where you'd really regret that.

I think maybe you got misdirected to the Jello website. Very Happy

Actually I do have a dance website, but it's separate from my writer's blog. My Facebook page, however, is intertwined with both. Seriously, thank you all very much. It's rather scary and exciting. Knowing what a tough sell horror is, I am surprised that I've gotten so many agent requests.

Don't things jiggle on belly dancers? Thought a little jiggle was a requirement? Haha.

Either way, I was joking of course. I love how you title this "goodish" news. Understatement? Haha.

Yes, a little jiggle is a good thing. Too much and it gets scary. Wink

Well, I'm saving the word 'good' for an agent offer of representation, if I get one.

Exciting times for ya :o}

Is there a reason, though, why you're subbing to agents and not to publishers?

Bizzy, I'm trying to get an agent first because many publishers will not accept unsolicited submissions. An agented writer has a better chance at reaching more publishers which equals a better shot at getting published.

Thank you, Paula. My thought is if not with this MS, then with another perhaps. Although I would love to see this one in print first. It's a special little story to me. If it does get published, I will get a griffin tattoo on my upper left arm, and said griffin's name will be Frank. Smile

Effie knows why, too! I really hope everyone else gets a chance to find out.

These days, it might be. There's an article floating round (someone tweeted it to me, I think) about the death of the slush pile. Most publishing houses are only dealing in solicited manuscripts!

All that aside, fantastic news for you dgrintails! I echo the others with 'goodish' ??? WTF...it's frickin' awesome to have that much interest all ready

Cheers

There's an article floating round

Could this be it? link: Death of the Slushpile

It's a decent article, and my main concern is that it's from a journalist who's only managed to get one book published, and she's writing it from the viewpoint of her experience with her own publisher.

And she doesn't boost her credibility by blaming the start of the death of slushpiles on 911 and the anthrax posting scares. It's a poor causal link. Any reduction in slushpile reading was probably due more to failing worldwide economies than fear of anthrax in emails or someone flying a plane into your PO box. (Ask Ken--I bet his slushpile for Totem is fat and bulging. And anthrax free.)

Yeah, yeah, yeah, some publishers are going agented-only. But check out Ralan.com and you'll find plenty who aren't...and a frequent closed to subs because they're overloaded or about to close up shop. Sadly, that's the sort of thing the best agent in the world can't overcome.
