Teeth v. Jennifer's Body

Post by Balor on Wed Jan 13, 2010 3:11 pm

Just watched Jennifer's Body yesterday. Liked the first fifteen minutes and the last fifteen minutes. Everything in between I found ho-hum, and the dialogue was a little, well, too intentionally quirky, I think.

That being said, as I was watching it, I couldn't shake the feeling that I'd seen the movie before. Then, after talking with my lady for it a bit, I realized that the major themes in the storyline (female coming-of-age, sexual power, the male predatory nature turned on its head) had been done, and in a much better way, in 2008, when "Teeth" came out.

I write this not necessarily to lambaste Jennifer's Body, but to celebrate Teeth. I loved that movie, even though the graphic scenes of imasculation were a little tough to take in. I think it was seriously one of the most original horror movies to come out over the last five years. It had everything - cringeworthy moments, good acting, deep themes, well-written youthful dialogue - and was a visual metaphor in the ways only horror and science fiction can do. A hidden gem, really. Can you tell I loved it?

What does everyone else think? Did you see both movies? Which one did you think was better?

Inquiring minds want to know.

TEETH was great...JENNIFER'S BODY was anemic "mainstream" poopy caca.

But I agree with you about the similar theme...sort of.

Haven't seen Teeth but I did catch Jennifer's Body the other night. I enjoyed it more for its comedic moments than the "horror" -- which was pretty much non-existent. I thought it was on par with the likes of Ginger Snaps as far as wise-cracking dialogue (although Ginger Snaps had its scary moments). I actually liked the creative dialogue in Jennifer's Body. I liked it more however in Juno (same writer). For those who haven't seen Jennifer's Body, I wouldn't recommend spending the money to rent it. But if it happens to be on cable it's worth a look. Also, with all the hype about Megan Fox you might think Jennifer's Body is her movie. It's not. It's Amanda Seyfried's movie. She's the one that has the brighter future in acting. Megan on the other hand is nothing but a walking bedroom poster.

Now I have to rent Teeth.
