Soundtrack For Your Cold Black Heart.....

Post by Shiney on Fri Oct 03, 2008 5:58 pm

I will unabashedly announce here my love of music...mainly metal (sleaze/glam/hair metal) but also indie, old school country, alternative country, gothic....pretty much everything save for hip hop and new pop...

this thread is a salute to artists that to me embody a sense of dark wonder and awe in their music...companion piece soundtracks to rainy nights...cemetary walks and dumping bags of lime in the crawlspace...

The following list of artists all, for one reason or another, embody this "dark" vibe in some way or another....Feel free to add you own or comment, but fear most of these acts will be unknown to some...

16 HORSEPOWER (fantastic melding of old bluegrass gospel sounds with a gothic rock twist)

PAPER CHASE (If PINK FLOYD was raped by TOOL and kept the baby)

HANDSOME FAMILY (rich stunning depressive country music)

DRESDEN DOLLS ( gothily executed cabaret)

DEADBOY & THE ELEPHANTMEN (If Lovecraft had written an album for WHITE STRIPES and PEARL JAM to record together)

TOM WAITS (needs no blurb)

NICK CAVE & THE BAD SEEDS (see TOM WAITS blurb)

LORDS OF THE NEW CHURCH (robust slashes of punk with black eyes and leather)

I love the Dresden Dolls! I did my make up like hers for Halloween last year.

If I come in here and say that I like the Magnetic Fields for their witty snarkiness, am I going to get ripped apart?

I'm looking for something with an ethereal voice and a dark, pulsing beat to write to. Any suggestions, or just good ole Pandora.com?

Not a chance. Just look at my signature to get an idea of the vastly different styles I dig on.

What about Emilie Autumn (http://www.myspace.com/emilieautumn)? She's a favorite of mine, but I'm not sure she has the ethereal voice on her more recent stuff. On Enchant, sure, because it was largely a piano/vocals album. Either way, she kicks ass.

For just dark ethereal voice, try Autumn Tears (http://www.myspace.com/thetrueautumntears). They're a band I have on my writing playlist. Dead Can Dance is another that fits this mold.

For evoking an emotion like that, it's tough to beat the old country blues artists. Skip James especially comes to my mind. Devil Took My Woman gives me the chills every time.

Black Sabbath by Black Sabbath: Listen to it loud, listen to it in the dark.

Anything by Tom Waits....he's such a cutie.

Ziggy Stardust, Low and Heroes by Bowie (His first name is David, but he's better known as God!!)

Here's something I posted on Toasted Cheese a few months back:

I'm curious to know what you all listen to—if anything—while writing. Ocassionally I can shuffle all the stuff I have ripped to my PC, which ranges from folk to rap to death metal. But usually I listen to two playlists.

One is progressive metal and rock—The Flower Kings, Spock's Beard, Canvas Solaris, Starcastle, etc. The second playlist consists of really atmospheric music, stuff that sort of puts me in a trance. The atmospheric stuff is what I listen to most of the time. Right now, that playlist has the following bands/artists:

Ascension Of The Watchers (sample)
Autumn Tears (sample)
Brendan Perry (sample)
Dead Can Dance (sample)
Delerium (sample)
Devin Townsend (his weird ambient/instrumental stuff) (sample)
Epica (their "score" album) (sample)
Lisa Gerrard (sample)
Nightwish (their instrumental versions) (sample)

I listed all that and added samples because I'm interested in expanding. I've always enjoyed music like this, but I had a limited use for it. Now, however, it keeps me focused when I'm writing. So I want more. Going by those samples, does anyone have any suggestions?

And I'm generally interested in what you all listen to when writing. I have a friend that cannot write unless he's got extreme metal playing. Haha.
I have recently add some albums by the following bands:

Anathema (sample)
Erik Norlander (sample)
Grey Skies Fallen (sample)

Particularly...Judgement, A Fine Day To Exit, and A Natural Disaster, by Anathema; Two Way Mirror, by Grey Skies Fallen; and Seas Of Orion, by Erik Norlander. Great albums!
All the links might not work now, but this is the kind of stuff I listen to when writing. Not always, but when everything else is distracting me, I play the playlist with those bands above in it.

flabby: Bowie is my glitter god! We had a Bowie party a few years back where you had to dress as him and perform a song to get in the door. It was awesome!

kenwood: I just copy/pasted that whole post so I can check those out. Thanks!

If I want something kind of airy and melancholy, I write to Sufjan Stephen's Illinoise cd. "Casimir Pulaski Day" is the cheeriest song about cancer that you'll ever hear, and "John Wayne Gacy Jr." sounds like a love song. I also wrote a scene last night to Ludo's "The Horror of our Love" which I dedicate to all of you in the creepiest manner possible.

I remember the first time i heard 'Five Years', i was seven years old and my babysitter played it whilst looking after me and me sister. I've been potty about him ever since.

The stuff on Youtube with him and Mike Garson is divine.

Flabby, that was an incredible link! What a sexy man. All he has to do is stand there.

One of my favorite songs is his version of "Sorrow".

And of course I grew up on Labyrinth, so.

Bowie has NEVER done a bad album.....NEVER.

As for soundtracks for writing...a fave of mine is an odd little band called

pAper chAse, and particularly their "Hide The Kitchen Knives" cd...an unholy fuckfest between PINK FLOYD, TOOL and BAUHAUS...hell yes!!

Weird. I was under the impression that Bowie has never done a good album.

That was my impression as well.

Maybe we could put it to a vote.

Shiney, I had no idea you were a Dresden Dolls fan. Have you listened to Amanda Palmer's solo album? It's not quite as good as the Dolls, but it's still very enjoyable - was lucky enough to catch her live back in February too.

I am now on the prowl for Ghoultown cds. I am very interested in this band now... so if anyone has their cds and dont want em let me know!

Ghoultown rule! Count Lyle from Solitude Aeturnus (ex-bassist) formed that band.

I've been downloading a ton of old 80s rock/metal albums from blogs. Really obscure out-of-print stuff like this:

I missed some awesome music in the 80s.
