Yep. If you pre-order both from Amazon.com, they're $9 a piece. Shipping for both is $4.98. The total is $22.98.

That's a KILLER deal! Def

Walmart.com is now offering both for $8.99 each, with free S&H. So $17.98 for both. FUCK YEAH!

Now Sears is offering to reimburse buyers the amount of these books bought through Walmart or Amazon in Sears credit! Awesome.

Everyone is once again ranting about the indie bookstores, because, as someone just tweeted (can't believe I just wrote that word), "the deep discounters can AFFORD to lose a ton of money on a single product for some kind of dumb market-share reason but...the small business people who actually PAY BILLS AND FEED FAMILIES FROM THEIR HARD WORK can't discount as much. So they fail." I've always disliked that sort of whining.

I like this idea:

So what does this do to indie bookshops, struggling as they already are? Well, it might actually help them, according to PubLunch, which reports:

"Boulder Bookstore buyer Arsen Kashkashian has suggested via Twitter that fellow indies cancel their publisher pre-orders on these deep-discounted forthcoming titles and take advantage of their competitors' loss leaders. Bookstores will save money, he reasons, while helping Amazon and Walmart.com lose more."

Rule number 1. Don't try to compete directly on price. You will lose.

Rule number 2. Stop whining

Yeah, my feelings on this are mixed. On one hand, great score! Who doesn't love cheap books? Books are expensive, and I only really buy them for long trips. Otherwise I'm haunting the library.

On the other hand, as somebody who is hoping to make her living by writing and selling books, you can see why this concerns me. And I'm certain that I'll shake my fist at those Cheapy McCheapensteins who spend time at the library and not the bookstore.

As for the whining: my dad used to say, "The only thing better than not letting you go out is not letting you go out and then hearing you whine and cry over it."

There's really little to worry about here. This is a marketing scheme, nothing more.

As for my own purchasing habits...I don't buy books (at least hardcover) by big-name authors any longer. (The last ones I DID purchase were copies of the first four Dark Tower books, which were ruined when my basement flooded years ago...and those I purchased used on Ebay) That said, however, I HAVE purchased quite a few books by up-and-comers and writer friends in recent years; in other words, the folks that NEED support, I GIVE my support to. They deserve it...and perhaps I'll end up being cosmically rewarded in the long run, as well.

I would LOVE to support more small press authors, but those fucking prices kill me. Yeah, it's cool to have limited editions, but what kind of exposure is 100 copies?

There's more involved in that whole thing, I know, but I'm being selfish here. Let me vent! Haha. There's just been so many books I've wanted to read, but I can't bring myself to pay more than $25 for a book. I think the only time I've ever done it was for Dean Koontz's Book of Counted Sorrows and I regretted it, because that stinkin' book was ruined by Dean's cheesy and woefully goofy "how it came to be" part, which was half the damn book. Just sucked the life out of the thing.

And that was only $35! Never again. Haha.

I've always wanted to read Book of Counted Sorrows because he always has the quotes in front of his other books. I'm intrigued by that.

There are very few books that I'll reread, so it isn't worth it to buy them. I just end up giving them away. But I'm with Rob in that I'll buy books from up and comers before the big authors, generally. Although I had a gift card, so I just bought Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman. I love it! I read a book of his short stories before, but that was it. This was pretty cool.

The poems really aren't great. They're barely good, you know, but the whole book should have been presented in a dark and mysterious way. That would have really worked. Instead, Dean wrote about 40 pages on goofball nonsense. I was so irritated. I've contemplated reviewing it in ST.

And I rarely buy hardcover because I also hardly ever re-read. I buy some of my top favorites in hardcover, but that's it, unless they're $5 bargain bin buys. Beyond that, I used PaperbackSwap and stuff. But I've considering going back and re-reading some Koontz and stuff. Some of that crap I have read since high school, and there's no way in hell I'll remember those books now.
