Friday the 13th (remake)

Post by andrewkempster on Mon Oct 05, 2009 4:57 am

I had been reliably informed that this film was the business, and last night I took it upon myself to find out.

I'd love to say that this film suffered from a severe case of Ridyard Syndrome, however they were honest enough to say it was a remake. I've never been a huge fan of this run of films. Seen one, seen 'em all. The only one I hadn't seen (until a couple of months ago) was the original, which pleasantly surprised me.

Spoiler:
However, whereas in the original it was Jason's mother doing all the hacking and slashing, they've covered that in the first two minutes of this one and handed the bloody gauntlet straight to Jason.

You can see why, though. Anybody who you ask about the Friday the 13th series will tell you that it's Jason Voorhees. If the remake had been faithful to the original, I think there would have been a lot of head scratching from the younger folks.

Anyway, the remake, in my opinion, added nothing to the original idea. It felt like just another excuse to get a load of better-than-average looking late-teeners together so that they can be dispatched in various (although not too various, I thought) ways. I found myself frequently checking my phone, checking the laptop, because it got a little bit boring. I hope Bay doesn't let this happen to Nightmare On Elm Street.

My two pence worth.

Did anybody ever play that awful Friday the 13th game on the original NES? Yeah. I so did.

They made a game of that? Missed it. But I never had a NES.....yes, cry for me.

I shall cry for you! NES and SNES are deeply rooted in my psyche. My brother and I were the last kids in the neighborhood to get one, but we played that sucker until we had blisters on our thumbs. I'm still a gaming freak, although I've switched to the PS2. It's creative, relaxing, and I come up with some of my best stories that way. My brain is working, but really...not.

Iím a huge fan of the F 13 flicks (bet you couldnít guess, huh?) Yeah they're not great cinema, or great anything, other than great fun. Bloody junk food for the brain, I guess. It could also be that my first ďrealĒ horror flick was Friday part 4 and since then the big J-man has kind of been my buddy. Anyway, about the remake, surprisingly I didnít hate it. Yes it added nothing new, but if it had then fans of the old movies would have been pissing and moaning even louder than they already were; ďWhat? Jason donít run, or set traps, or take prisoners, or this, or that, etc.Ē I always kind of feel sorry for the guys doing the remaking (but not for the brain dead studios just wanting to grab a quick buck) because they are in a no win situation. Theyíll never make the old fans happy but they still try and usually fail.

Oh, and I agree, the kills in this one were remarkably unremarkable. For a series that has gotten by largely on its creative ways of dispatching people, these seemed very ďmehĒ.

Now as for the F 13 game on the Nes, oh yeah I remember that game. Nothing like running around a circular camp path chucking rocks at a big, purple Jason every time he pops up. Laughing

And Mercedes, you're a spooky chick that likes gaming? Be still my already dead and withered black heart, I think Iím in love! Embarassed

I remember stripping my PS2 to see if I could get it working again. I couldn't. RIP.

However I now have my PS3 and I am glued. They've got some seriously good titles on there. Look out for Dead Rising 2 in Feb '10. Holy BeJesus, Dawn Of The Dead comes to the console. I had the first one on the XBox 360 - amazing!

I bought a PS3 and promptly gave it back. It was $400, shiny and beautiful, but wasn't backwards compatible. My PS2 stash is big enough that I would be out a lot of money if I couldn't play them anymore. Not to mention that you can buy PS2 games dirt cheap online and in gaming stores.

Mmm...gaming stores. I just...give me a moment.

Anyway, the PS3 graphics are absolutely gorgeous, but maybe in the future, when we want to add (yet another) console. Or next time I'm in Wales, we can play. Razz

Ha ha. Wales? I can save you the trouble - I'll send you a couple of pictures of some sheep, some hills, and Tom Jones's old house. End of.

And as far as backwards compatible, yeah Sony really messed that up. Made no sense at all. Numpties.

Nintendo WAS where it was at. Back in the 1980's and early '90's.

I still like the SNES best, but the N64 and Gamecube are far superior
to anything Sony has ever put out. It's not even debatable, it's cold
hard fact.

In all fairness, I have the Wii, and a copy of The Godfather Blackhand Edition. There is no greater feeling than grabbing someone (virtually) by the scruff, butting them, and then throwing them into a baker's furnace. Suh-weet!

The Wiiís not horrible, just not a console for me. But then Iím neither 8 nor 80, which seem to be the Wiiís target demographic, so what do I know? Wink

But for the record, I did just play DEAD SPACE EXTRACTION on the Wii and was quite impressed. If you have a Wii and like spooky games then I recommend it. Oh, and if you missed last yearís original DEAD SPACE then stop whatever you are doing and play that game now! It was amazing.
