Trying to get a feel for ST

Post by EffieCollins on Sun Sep 27, 2009 7:22 pm

Okay. so, I've been browsing, lurking and posting occasionally. Mostly, I'm observing--trying to get to know the magazine through the forum because I can't buy a copy (WTF, you ask? I'm broke... sorry.). However, none of this tells me jack diddly shit about what ST would like between the sheets (hehe so to speak) so let's get down to it.

Instead of talking about this or that or the other, blah-de-blah-de-blah, I'll just ask how you guys at ST feel about the following subjects(as relevant to a story).

Dismemberment (I don't mind it if paired with the following)

Cannibalism (A favorite of mine)

Demons (Very bad demons, maybe.)

Ghosts (Kind of, if they aren't just your normal, run of the mill guys)

Insanity/Mental Defect (Love it, love it, love it)

Blood and Guts (not my personal fave, but you know)

Doppelgangers (I love these guys)

Zombies (Overdone and not my style)

Vampires (Real vampires--not the porn star boy toys of the recent ick-fest in fiction--definitely. Boy toy vamps are def. not my thing. I get irate over vampire sympathy/protagonists.)

Ghouls (I haven't read a good ghoul story in a very long time. I actually can't even remember the last one. Sad. I haven't tried these guys yet, so I don't know how I'd feel about writing them)

Icky-bug (I'm not much into big bug horror, but some people are.)

Religious stuff not covered by demons (I'm not even sure what I mean here...)

Okay--I think that covers quite a few things. I'll let you answer these before bombarding you with more.

All of those things would fly. Everybody here has diverse tastes, so you have at least one hardcore fan of everything in your list. Except for zombies, I think. Perhaps there is a closet zombie lover on staff, but if so, they're not saying.

The story is above all. If it's a jaw-dropping story with zombies, we want it. If it's super lame cannibal story, we don't.

I think that's true of most mags. Just checking to see if there was anything that got a resounding no. Thank ya. Smile

All those things are okay...if they are done in a fresh way....We want ANYTHING that is unique and makes us stop and say "DAMN!!"...So it's all fair game...just bear in mind we are VERY picky and I mean VERY in the extreme sense of the word...

As long as it's well-written, there are very few off limit topics. Obviously we don't want any stories involving torture porn or child abuse or any other subjects like that. If it's beyond the bounds of good taste no thanks, but cannibalism, demons and dismemberment? Sounds very tasty to me.

Even better, how about demons dismembering each other and then eating the nicest bits? As long as it's literate and fresh, I'll like it.

I'm not one for sex or child abuse in my stories. I have a couple of stories with kids. No real abuse, though one is about a girl who commits suicide with a beer can to escape abuse. But, it isn't horror, so no worries there. I think it's great you guys are picky. I'd much prefer to be accepted somewhere that actually gives a fuck. (Excuse the term) Or rejected, as the case may be.

Yeah, really we have few limitations on what we'll accept, if done well. However, most of what you listed comes off so goddamn cheesy that it's understandable why most publications simply blacklist them completely. Imagine, however, if we said we didn't want zombie stories, like so many other publications, we'd never have gotten "The Dead March."

When you've got someone like John Skipp suggesting "The Dead March" might be one of the best zombie stories EVER FUCKING WRITTEN...well, you understand why our door is open to everything. It's all about the story. NOTHING else matters.

Yay for Ken! I was going to chime in with “what’s with all the no-love for the zombies?” I still think they can be fun guys if handled well. Last issue of ST, let’s not forget two stories that I specifically mentioned in my review of it on Hororworld. One was “The Dead March” (as Ken already pointed out) but the other was a lil piece of flash fiction called “’Til Death do us Part” and both of these featured my favorite little flesh munchers. Both were great stories.

Now if you want to talk about most over-used, worn out & tired monster ever, that has got to be vampires and even they can still be great if effectively used. I mean, just look at Twilight!

Shocked

HA, just kidding. Wink

But really, for an amazing new vampire flick (can’t speak for the book as I never read it) there’s, Let The Right One In. If you haven’t seen this Swedish import then I highly suggest you do before the inevitable remake comes out. A great horror film that just happens to be about vamps.

Oh good grief don't get me started on Twilight and those.... things. Those aren't vampires, not in my book. I did a couple of pieces on my blog about vampires. Well, they are more rants than anything. One's called "Oh you sexy BEAST you!" where I bitch about this whole craptastic fad of vampires being the newest sexiest forbidden fruit. I'm fairly passionate about this whole sympathetic monster bullshit. rsmccoy is too. We've bitched about it together over at that other place.

Zombies seem to get classified more as sci-fi than a horror monster, which I suppose is basically true. I can't write zombie fic, for the cheese Ken mentioned. And while most of the above listed subjects may turn out cheese-filled from most authors, if its cheesy, I won't sub it. Simple as that. I'm not one of those that thinks everything I write is the BEST THANG EVA!!! Nah, I can write shit; very bad shit, in fact. That's what revisions and the recycle bin on my pc is for.

Ken, I think it's excellent that you don't blacklist any of these subjects. So many publications miss out on some damn good stories because of it. Trying to move from non-paying markets to paying markets is proving a bit harder than I thought, simple because I don't know wtf I'm doing. I only started subbing work out five or six months ago, and it's mostly on a wing and prayer that I got it right. So thanks, for taking the time to answer this for me, y'all. You .
