So I'm familiar enough with Kurt's work that I knew it would be something gut-wrenching but strangely beautiful. The title is a definite winner, and I felt sympathetic but not saccharine toward the protagonist. That's a win. Also, the whole backwards thing was very cool.

This type of story can easily fall into the "Hooker with a Heart of Gold" cliche, but that was totally sidestepped. I liked this. And judging by the reviews that I'm reading, so did everybody else.

We actually had already accepted a story by Kurt at this point. He asked if it was okay to send us some more, for future consideration. So he did. I think he sent us a few tales that we didn't think were as good as the one we'd accepted (he set a standard with that first story, you know).

So anyway, then he mentioned this one tale that was a bit over 5,000 words. We'll accept a longer story, of course, but won't pay beyond $250. So he's cool with that, then he mentions the title. I was sold. Haha. Like, "Hell yeah! Send it." It really is a great title, huh? So anyway, this story just had to be in issue #1, so we bumped his other tale for a future issue.

Nick's first reply was "Wow.... That's like a two-by-four to the forehead." Indeed.

And I stand by that comment. It's a whopper of a tale. Smile

It's hard to pick a favorite, since I love all of these stories, but if I had to rank them, Kurt's tale would be up near the top for sure.

I think this is a fantastic story....it functions on alot of levels...Social commentary...psychological horror....exploitation sort of...But it is beautifully done.

Just really an outsatnding piece and it had to be to live up to a title like that.... Laughing

Thanks guys. Ken made some really good suggestions that helped change the shape of a couple of the passages. I think it made for a better story. Thanks Ken! I told you you knew what you were doing. rockon

See? We suck. lol

Well, someone just pointed out a mistake in this one. So I suck, too.

Kurt sucks as well. Guilty by association. lol

Reminds me of the Seinfeld episode when the gang all go to India for a wedding, but it's told in reverse.

Definitely a sad, melancholy story.

This was my favourite story in the whole mag. Not to say that the other stories weren't good, but this one was awesome. I loved the title, and the structure. It was just brilliantly entertaining. Even my boyfriend read it (he hasn't ever finished a book - he's not a big reader) and he really enjoyed it too.

I'm going to check out more of this guy's stuff

Wow, thanks Sophie! I wish I could say "Here, check out these links to all my books," but there are none available. (I've had two short story collections and a novel published, but they're long out-of-print.)

I've got a piece of flash fiction coming up in Shock Totem #2 and a couple of novellas coming out later this year.

In the meantime you can read "The Release," a story of mine that appeared in Weird Tales a couple years back. It's still available to read online here.

Brilliant story. Could have come across as very "gimmicky" in the hands of a lesser writer, but Kurt really knocked it out of the park. It was powerful, emotionally resonant, and just plain entertaining as hell.
