Not to take anything away from the other stories in issue #1, because I love them all, but "Below the Surface" remains my favorite. I love that it's truly dark fantasy, and the final sequence is just pure poetry.

I don't think this will be a top pick for many readers, mainly because of it's clear fantasy leanings which are not common in horror fic, but I hope those that can look beyond that find this to be a great little story.

Truth be told, I think it's my favorite as well. I'm a fan of realistic dark fantasy, and this one has all those elements.

Nice to throw in a little dark fantasy now and then. Nice change of pace. Good story beautifully written.

Interesting that you mention this, because I'm about 2/3 through issue #1 and this has been my least favorite. It's by no means a poorly written or bad story, but it simply doesn't strike the right nerves for me like the other ones did. It took too long to get into gear. I wasn't hooked right away, but had to plough through for a while.
It ended nicely though, just took too long to get there.

It's not straight up horror, to be sure, but it's beautifully written, and comes off like a fever dream to me. As I said, I really dig it, but I like fantasy when it's well done. This one is.

Thanks for the comments! All are greatly appreciated!

Sorry for my delay in replying. While on a 10 day vacation, my beloved laptop bit the dust. Now I'm home but busy with transferring files, setting up things, and learning Vista (Ugh!)

The good news is my copies of the magazine came while I was gone. Now to find time to read all the stories! Hopefully tonight!
