I would have expected, at the very least, to see Ann Rice on that list.

Hasn't she turned tail and started writing about angels or some such nonsense now? I never cared much for her books, though Lasher, Taltos and the other witchy ones were great in my opinion.

Yes, Effie, she writes about angels now, but I don't think anyone can deny the impact The Vampire Chronicles had. Maybe she didn't make the list because she's changed her subject matter so drastically. Who knows?

Oh yes. The Vampire Chronicles had major impact. I read them... and they were fine, but not something I'd read again and again. I did enjoy the above mentioned ones enough to have them on my bookshelves, but only a couple of the vampire books stayed. I gave a bunch away after I read them.

I suggest:

Tanith Lee
Poppy Z. Brite
Caitlin R. Kiernan
Shirley Jackson (The Haunting of Hill House is wonderful)
Mary Shelley

All quite good.

I'd add Joyce Carol Oates, as well.

I agree with all those choices. Female horror writers would make a good blog post, IMO. Not as a top 10/20, but just a layout of who they are and what they've done.

I agree.

And I mentioned Angela Carter elsewhere as well. Some of her stuff qualifies, and the writing is excellent.

EDIT: Looks like someone posted her story Wolf-Alice HERE, if you've never read her work.
