Top Twenty horror writers
At least here is one guy's list:
http://www.mania.com/top-20-greatest-horror-writers-alltime_article_113153.html
I like it... It's well thought out and balances the classic and modern authors in a thoughtful way, IMO
For Shiney: John Skipp gets an honorable mention.

That's great company. Lots of really great writers were left off, of course.

Both of you die! Haha. I like Saul. Yeah, he's been writing the same book nearly his entire career, but he does it well.Tall Tyrion wrote:That's my opinion as well...B.Napier wrote:ugh...John Saul...

Re: Top Twenty horror writers
Nice list, while some were missing, all I got to say is: H.P. LOVECRAFT at #1. At least someone gets it!

Re: Top Twenty horror writers
John Saul on this list is like a shiny nugget of poo on a white duvet...
And how come no Dan Simmons, Tom Piccirilli or Poppy Z Brite? They might not be mt favourites, but certainly better than Saul.

Listen here, you son of a bitch, I love John Saul!Rich Sampson wrote:John Saul on this list is like a shiny nugget of poo on a white duvet...

I do realize he's been writing the same book for decades, but he does it so well. Haha.

I like Saul too. I read Hellfire from him first. And the rest, as the old ones say, was like a prostitute. Hookin' baby, hookin'.

Ya know...The "E" in Shiney is there for a reason....there's a dumb story behind it....but yeah, I thought the same thing.

Yeah, get rid of Saul. I'd be down with putting Simmons on instead. Also, Laymon should be higher up on the list.

Heh.
To be fair, I've only read two of Saul's books, and they were older. One was When the Wind Blows, and the other was older than that. I liked them well enough (they were well-written, etc.) but not enough to get him into my top 20.
It's been a long time, but I am trying to remember whether they were supernatural, or more psychological. I remember When the Wind Blows better than the other, and I seem to recall a ghost element, though it was somewhat understated.

I'm just messing around. A lot of people dislike Saul. I'm just a fan boy. Haha.Steerpike wrote:Kenwood wrote:

Most of his books are psychological thrillers with a supernatural element. Unfortunately, they often tread the same paths, which I probably mentioned somewhere in this thread. I still dig him, though.

Not a single woman on the list? That's weird.
There will be an article about that somewhere. Women are noticeably lacking in the top 20 of pretty much everything.
Re: Top Twenty horror writers
If there weren't so many great female horror writers in the past and present--I wouldn't say anything, but there are MANY who seriously rival some of the guys on that list...enough that at least ONE should have made the cut. I've been coming across similar lists elsewhere--sort of a boy's club mentality...BUT...this year--Langan won the Bram Stoker novel award and Tanith Lee was one of the primary speakers at the Horror World Convention...in current horror sales women are holding their own. Women are scoring well in regards to pro-sales for horror short stories as far as I can tell. Where it counts...sales...things are pretty evenly spread out. I just find it strange that women are consistently left off some of these lists.
Re: Top Twenty horror writers
There was a really interesting thread about this at Shocklines. Of course, beings Shocklines, it spiraled out of control and into some ugliness, but the points were valid at first.

Well, Chastity Bono is number 20, so that may be wrong.
