So is anybody here a member or becoming a member of the Horror Writer's Association? Pros? Cons?

Aw, but you're still good and horrifying.

I'm also looking into the SFWA, but it's rules are a little more stringent. I do have a publication that counts toward those markets, however, so I'm thinking.

I haven't even looked at any of that stuff yet. I think we, Shock Totem, can be recognized in some manner. Maybe I should look into that part.

I never even thought of it - what's the advantages of it? Or is it just a club?

I can only suggest researching and joining in order to find out. Someone people say very good things, while just as many trash the whole organization as being elitist and worthless. So who knows. Judge for yourself is what I'd suggest.

Ken, as for ST:

I was looking into it with you in mind. You're already pro-pay, and you pay your authors evenly, which counts in your favor. ST has to be publishing for a year before you're eligible, at least with SFWA. I don't see any "You must be published in these particular magazines" restrictions on HWA, so you might already be eligible there.

I think it's worth it to apply in a year. It will definitely boost the quality of your submissions, I'd think.

The people I've talked to have a love/hate relationship with these organizations. Apparently you have access to things before they're announced elsewhere, and it's a fantastic place to network. Then again, I've heard the elitism side, too. I think I'm going to try it, because I genuinely enjoy people. If it sucks too badly, I can always bail later.

Of course, I still have to get two more pieces into specific markets to be eligible for SFWA. Blah.

We should form a STFWA, a Shock Totem Forum Writers Association and let them apply to join us.

So I'm in a challenge to see who can qualify for HWA first. Come by and cheerlead, if you so desire!

http://abrokenlaptop.wordpress.com/2009/07/01/823/

I decided to just go for it and see if it's anything that I'll be interested in or not. If anybody (Seven??) else is interested, they're more than welcome to join the challenge.
