Do You Care About Artwork Within A Publication?

Post by Kenwood on Wed Apr 29, 2009 12:03 pm

Quick question, folks. Do you care about artwork within a fiction publication?

It's not necessary, but it's a nice bonus.

It's usually kind of terrible, though. Really cheesy stuff.

I voted no, but only because I tend to overlook it.

It won't stop me from buying a book/magazine, but it will make an impression on me.

If it's terrible artwork, then of course skip it. But if it's something sensational, it'll add.

I'm a yes... I love admiring a skilled piece of artwork, possibly because I struggle to draw a straight line myself. And for a cover, of course, it's what a potential customer first sees.

A cover, definitely. Inner artwork is much harder to do, I think.

I'm trying to determine here whether or not we put artwork inside Shock Totem. I'm hoping to add a little comic, like a Far Side style, but beyond that there is nothing yet.

I am middle of the road on it...

if it's good -cool. If it sucks-not so.

But I don't feel it is a necessary thing to have.

Glimmer Train has very little art, and it works well. But it also sort of gives each issue an anthology vibe. But I think that works for them because they put out what is essentially a paperback, something people will be more likely to add to their bookshelf. Magazines tend to go in boxes or newspaper bins in a living room, next to the toilet, stuff like that.

We're not going to be a magazine; we'll be more like Glimmer Train and Black Gate.

Then I'd say no art unless you see something that absolutely knocks your socks off.

I'm a yes on artwork, I love seeing words skillfully combined with art. Though, if I'm going to see art work it has to be great artwork, rubbish art or art that doesn't wow me can make me flick past a story.

Therefore, unless it really rocks, no art work is best.
