Ken. Have you heard the entire album yet? It leaked the other day. It's really rather good. Didn't quite get in to it at first, but second time round onwards... phwoar.

I haven't downloaded it yet. I might. I'm gonna try to hold off, though. I've heard nothing but praise for it.

Wait until you see what I scored a copy of. I'm waiting till it arrives before saying it. Probably the rarest Devy item aside from his first demo.

I couldn't hold off on it, unfortunately. Just like with Ki and Addicted, I will know the album inside and out before the physical copy is in my hands. Doesn't bother me too much, though.

I have no idea what you've scored a copy of but you've got me intrigued, mate. Smile

Look what I scored:

Now...do I dare listen to it?

I had no idea these were both on the same tape. And on Jason's old website, he listed it as Blastula & The Satanitones. Anyway, I'm stoked!

You've got to digitise it too, man ;P

I found some dude online who was selling this demo and a copy of the IR8 demo. Cost me $65, but since I have the IR8 demo already, I'm going to sell the extra. Hopefully I can at least make my money back.

I need a damn cassette-to-USB converter.

Nice one, I hope you and the cassette will be very happy together ;P What a snag! And yes, you need a tape-to-USB converter, pronto.

Just posted this on Devin's forum:

So I listened to this tape.

Tree of the Sun is very much in the stoner-rock vein, with a little alt-stoner feel similar to Queens of the Stone Age. "Phoenix" is a really good song. "Athena/Red" is decent, but not quite as good.

The Blastula stuff is totally different. This is more akin to HAARHT, though without any electronic backbone. It's just down-tuned, groovy, with growling vocals. "Contain Us" is a pretty cool tune. Raw, but very good. "Spaztech" is less a song and more chaotic noise. There's structure there, groovy riffs and such, but nothing to really latch onto as a listener.

Either way, both are much better than the IR8 project. I don't hear Devin singing, though, and I can't really pick out anything that is reminiscent of his style, you know. He's there, but you wouldn't know it without the insert telling you.

Hopefully I can someday get these ripped to MP3 and get permission to share. (Yes, permission! Haha.)
I dig it. Wish they'd done more with the Tree of the Sun project.

Certainly sounds rather interesting. Glad you got hold of it, sharing or no sharing. As I recall, you were pretty curious to hear these.

On an unrelated note, it's taking every fibre of my being to not play Deconstruction to death before its official release.

Wow...so this thing is starting off like a Ki song. Unexpected. Ooh, and there it goes! SWEET! This dude is so awesome. Nice fucking intro.

Okay, gonna listen to the rest now. Haha.

Haha, yeah, I love the 'Praise The Lowered'. Reminds me a bit of the Project EKO stuff.

Also, I was just spinning that Christeen +4 EP and realised something. Part of 'Processional (somewhere around the 9:30 mark) is reused completely in the ending to 'The Mighty Masturbator'. That's an unexpected connection.

Yeah, I heard that back when there was just come clips of it online. I think that's what prompted me to send you the EP. Or maybe not.

Either way, I thought the album was killer! It took a couple spins, though, but that's because it wasn't what I expected. I was thinking this would be City x 10, you know. But it's not at all like SYL. It's fully Devin Townsend solo, despite the heaviness. It's doesn't have that raw SYL sound, which was what I expected.

When Devin talks about extreme, that's what anyone will think. But it's all good. I thought the whole thing was brilliant.

Yeah, I've heard a few people liken bits of to City and I just don't get where they're coming from. There's not an ounce of Strapping in there, it's more like Infinity gone mad.

All in all, Deconstruction's pretty brilliant. It took a few spins for me to really get in to, because really it's a bit of a clusterfuck (especially towards the end), but it's a good 'un. Not quite as good as Addicted, but then that was basically perfect for me.

EDIT: Also, yeah, you did point out the 'Processional' thing and that's what prompted you to send me Christeen +4. It's all on the previous page. Good memory, buddy. I'm senile!
