Devin Townsend Project

Post by Smindas on Sat Apr 11, 2009 7:22 pm

So, this album leaked and I couldn't resist checking it out a bit early. Of course I'll be a first day buyer, but I had a feeling this would be one of my favourite albums for this year. And wow, it's absolutely stunning. I've only listened through it once so far but it's just so well crafted. It's primarily pretty mellow and quite jazz-fusion sounding at points with a lot of well executed ambience. It's sort of how I always wanted The Hummer and Devlab to sound. Really, I fail to see how any Devy fans could be disappointed by it, it blew me away on one listen only. It's great to have Townsend back.

Who? The name sounds familiar, but I can't say I know much about him.

Damn you! Now I have to go download it. Dev gets my money no matter what, so I'll perpetuate the injustice a bit.

Hey, you ever heard the song "Idom?"

Vocalist for Vai's Sex & Religion album, mastermind behind Strapping Young Lad, and all-around musical genius. His solo stuff is nothing short of brilliant.

Hmmmmmmm..... I hated Sex and Religion. Terrible album, although the vocalist had nothing to do with that. It was more Vai's self-abusive noodling that I remember detesting. Never heard SYL either...

Give me a comparison. If I picked up this album, what would it sound like?

Sex & Religion wasn't very good, no. But Devin's vocals were awesome. And he was only 19 at the time.

As for Devin's solo stuff, especially Ki, it's hard to describe. He's got his own unique sound and style. His stuff is really mellow to heavy to weird. Here are some samples:

As for Sex & Religion, I'm actually quite a big fan of that album. I know everyone else slates it, but I think it has some great songs on it. There's a few real stinkers, but the good more than makes up for it. Then again, I am a bit of a sucker for cheesy rock.

I've never really delved into his stuff...I remember hearing the first SYL disc way back when I worked at RECORD REVOLUTION...and dug it.

I sort of liked that VAI disc but never knew he was the singer on it.

Guess I oughta try and find some of this stuff.

I bought the first SYL album in 1995, on town pass during basic training. I bought that album, Life of Agony's Ugly, and Marilyn Manson's Smells Like Children. All cassettes. Haha. Either way, the SYL disc blew me away. Not all of it, there are some stinkers, but there are some killer tunes on that one. And it was a HUGE change for me in terms of what I listened to. It was easily the heaviest album I enjoyed at that point.

Anyway, when Ocean Machine came out, I picked it up and fell in love with it. There's something almost magical it--and all Dev's solo stuff, for that matter. That's when I actually realized Devin was the same Devin on the Sex & Religion album. Just hearing him sing, you know.

Sex & Religion has some good tunes, a lot of crappy tunes, and one amazing tune. "Deep Down Into The Pain" slays.

It came out on a Japanese compilation. Very hard to find. If you have the self-titled SYL album, you'll recognize parts of the song.

DEVIN TOWNSEND - IDOM

It's a really great tune. Kind of makes you wonder what a whole album like this would sound like. It's sort of like Infinity meets Physicist.

I've never heard of this guy, but then again my own musical aspirations and interest faded away almost 20 years ago. Listening to the clips Ken provided makes me want to seek out some more of his work. That was pretty good stuff.

That 'Idom' song is quite interesting. I'm not sure I'd be that keen on an album of stuff in that style exclusively though. Reminds me a lot more of the Lad than most of Dev's solo stuff.

It's basically an early version of "Dire" and "Consequence."

Ah, I should really pick up a few more Lad CDs at some point.

You should. Especially The New Black, if you don't have it. That one is my favorite. It's like the perfect mix of SYL and Dev's solo stuff. I love the song "Fucker." The label tried to pressure Devin into writing a radio hit. So he basically wrote music that could have been written by Korn. The label was pleased. Then Devin went and wrote these ridiculous, profanity-laced lyrics that would totally keep the song from every being played on the radio. And the lyrics are directed at the people who tried to force him to write a radio hit. Fucking hilarious! Haha.

lol

EDIT: Goddamn! Look at that image. Haha. Devin can look like a crazy man sometimes.

Yeah, The New Black has been on my 'to buy' list for ages now - I love the songs I've heard from it but I rarely see it in shops so I tend to pick other things up. Will have to order it when I get some money in!

I think it's brilliant! I've been listening to it non-stop. It is insane how he can still be so heavy with nearly no distortion. He still manages to make it sound so massive and rich. And everyone seems to love it, too, which is awesome!

Yeah, that's pretty much the opinion I've come to except I've decided not to listen to it anymore until the official release. Make it something to look forward to, you know?

Also, you should appreciate this Ken, Dev's first (I think) interview in a while; http://www.roadrunnerrecords.com/blabbermouth.net/news.aspx?mode=Article&newsitemID=118428
Very interesting stuff, explains a lot. Addicted sounds genius.

Yeah, I watched that last night. It's a great interview. It's almost like Dev and I have been walking the same sort of path these last few years.

And Addicted sounds like the same concept behind Punky Bruster, which is a fantastic punk album.

Yeah, I was thinking it had a Punky Bruster vibe too. Cooked On Phonics is an all time favourite of mine.

Pretty amazing that he wrote and recorded that in a week and a half, huh? Haha.

And can I just say that Ki is frickin' amazing? Because it is.

I love how he just lauds that fact over the various bands he's mocking in one of the last tracks. Always brings a smile to my face.

Yes, yes you can. I've decided to break my "no listen to release" policy and am currently spinning it. One thing I got to mention before - the female vocalist has a great voice and is a nice touch on the record.

From Addicted:

Sounds muddy, but that's just studio jamming. The album version will sound brilliant. The second one sounds more like the Devin we know.

Saw these on Blabbermouth a bit earlier. Sounds decent and, as you said, more akin to what we're familiar but I think it's just a bit too little to get properly excited about yet. Give me some vocals and then I'll go all fanboy again. Besides, I'm still listening to Ki on quite a regular basis.

It's never too early with Devin. Haha. But I was referring to quality of sound, not song. I'm sure he'll release an album I don't care for at some point, but it'll probably sound brilliant.
