I read this entire book to my husband on a road trip, and I liked it surprisingly well. But then, I love that "trapped in one place, let's all fall apart!" books. Lord of the Flies. The Beach.

I so need to write one.

The Beach? The one with Leonardo DeCraprio? I love that movie!

I thought that was a Bette Midler movie? scratch

Actually, I thought she was referring to On The Beach, by Nevil Shute.

Nope, Ken's right! Not only was it a book first, but I understand that it was Alex Garland's first novel.

"Hello, your book was awesome. We'd like to turn it into a major motion picture."

"Uh...okay!"

That would so rock.

I haven't read On The Beach. Should I?

Couldn't tell you. I've owned it for 20 years and still haven't gotten around to reading it.

Now I didn't know that Alex Garland wrote the book The Beach. See, learn something new every day. Now if he wrote a novel of 28 Days Later, I would be all over that like flies on shit.

Oh, and I didn't like The Ruins (the fillum). Just didn't do anything for me. Of course, maybe the book explains more.

For me (The Ruins movie) was just above being a “meh” movie. That is a movie that’s neither bad nor good, one that’s watchable but soon forgettable. I watched it and like the gory scenes, but then I’m a splatter fan from way back so some good red stuff and raise a “meh” movie a few bars, at least for me.

Now the novel I really enjoyed and Scott Smith wrote both that and the screenplay for this movie, so who can we blame for meh-ifying of the material? The director? The Actors? I don’t know, but they whole thing was definitely saturated with meh.

I liked the book quite a bit. It was exciting (though I didn't like how it ended).

The movie....not so much. Also, I didn't like how it ended.
