The Happening

Post by Tall Tyrion on Sat Jan 31, 2009 5:06 pm

Just watched this last night with my son. Even though I a huge fan of most of MNS's past work, I had held off
because I had heard a bit about the subject. My son insisted that he HAD to see it though, so I relented.

My worst fears were confirmed. Not only does this movie have an absolutely STUPID premise,
Spoiler:
(plants are releasing a toxin as a defense mechanism to kill us because humans are scrweing up the planet)
it is also incredibly boring! Sleep

I have loved a lot of his past movies, but after The Lady in the Water and now this clunker, I'm going to be leery of his future projects. So much for our modern day Hitchcock. No

Maybe the pressure was too much to live up to. Sixth Sense was awesome, and the rest sucked.

Though I thought The Lady in the Water was kind of sweet. That's the sort of thing that I would write, and label it "whimsical" so that it would attract a different type of audience.

I think because he came out with such a great debut, that nothing he does will ever be good enough unless it surpasses The Sixth Sense. I've thought all his movies were good, expect Unbreakable. But others think that's an awesome movie. I thought Signs was good, and I absolutely loved The Village. Lady In The Water was okay, but I wish I'd know it was actually a silly little bedtime story he made up for his daughter. I didn't learn that until after. Had I know before, it probably would have been more enjoyable.

I haven't seen The Happening yet, though I do own it. So no spoilers! =)

Cool then. I don't exactly regret renting it. MNS is still a great director. It is shot well and some scenes are creepy and effective, but the overall premise is lame. I think Shamalamadingdong needs some outside writers. He's shot his wad at coming up with script ideas.

What would really be awesome is if he adapted a Stephen King story. First, it would be an instant paycheck for both. That's a can't miss collaberation.

Second, King's stories are great, but the directors who get them usually mess them up. MNS would do the story up right. Someone e-mail both of those guys and set it up... Smile

The Villiage was awesome as well. I liked Unbreakable, although it was not as good as Sixth Sense, and was basically the same movie.

SIXTH SENSE was awesome, although not a repeat viewing film...it loses punch when one knows the "twist"

UNBREAKABLE was great....then again I was a huge comicbook/superhearo fan as a kid and this is a loveletter to them.

SIGNS was okay...just a bit lame and over the top...

THE VILLAGE was good, but I figured out the twist to it early on and found it draggy after.

LADY IN THE WATER was mucho gayo...nice visuals but plenty stupid.

THE HAPPENING I have not seen...and have no plans to.

Woah woah woah! You thought 'Unbreakable' sucked? Ah please, say it ain't so. I loved that film. Unfortunately for me, someone told me the twist for 'The Sixth Sense' before I saw it. Sumbitch!

As far as 'The Happening' goes, I would have enjoyed the film more if people hadn't spoken. MNS's character's have the habit of saying and doing exactly what you wouldn't in those situations, post 'Signs' (and it was starting to creep in there too). His ideas are great, his characters are unbelievable.

This film could have been a whopper, with fries.

I agree for the most part...except the liking of LADY IN THE WATER...I wanted to...I was totally down with a lot of the visuals and the characters...but it was a bit incoherent.

THE HAPPENING is okay, and his parable is there, a bit "green" for my tastes but there. It's not a bad movie just not very good.

Wait, what? Shiney doesn't like something because it's incoherent? I never thought I'd see this day.

Sorry, Ken, but you got those two mixed up; it’s the other way around. Hmm, I figured as an editor you would have caught that mistake, but I guess no one is perfect. Razz

Haha! Very Happy

The Village was pretty predictable, but I liked it. Saw the ending coming a mile away, but it didn't really bother me. I liked the characters for the most part.

Unbreakable was just painfully boring. I saw that one in the theatre, and perhaps that was part of the problem. I have a tendency to wander in and out during movies, and you can't do that there. But I thought the whole "They call me Mr. Glass" thing was just lame.

I saw The Happening recently and thought it was pretty boring. I've liked his movies...well, besides Unbreakable and Lady In The Water (would have liked the latter better had I really was a bedtime story, not a metaphorical tagline). But The Happening is shite.

The premise is great. People say it's a lame premise, but it's the execution that's lame. And especially the way it ends.
Spoiler:
It literally just ends, stops, no reason given really. People just stop dying. FUCKING LAME! Sure, the "phenomenon" happens elsewhere, but that's bullshit.
This is a movie based on a great idea thought up by a dude who couldn't figure out what he wanted to say. It flopped like a Hot Carl.

But I'm still a fan of the dude.

One of the "best" things about The Crappening (ha, you see what I did there? I am so witty!) is...
Spoiler:
People can outrun the wind! That’s almost as good as Hollywood’s “people outrunning explosions” or Vin Diesel out running daylight in Chronicles of Riddick. Ah science, movie makers really should make friends with it.

They're cheesy, but I love the Riddick movies. Pitch Black is a guilty pleasure.

Yeah, I dig the Riddick movies, too. (Never watched the cartoon, though.) But there's an element in those kinds of movies that allows to unbelievable to be believable. In The Happening, though, that sort of thing doesn't exist.
